freedom, rights, and other species
    #1675117 - 06/30/03 08:32 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

some say that freedom is the right to do anything you please so long as it doesn't initiate force against another human being. what about other creatures though? what ethical obligations, if any, do human beings have towards other organisms, and which organisms are owed these considerations?

What? Other species? I have no idea what you're talking about....

Well, I guess its time that I go eat my hamburger, wrapped in my paper to-go bag, with a paper cup and other various paper products. Oh maybe I should go get some gas for my turbo-diesel trinitron F350 too.

hehe.

I dont know if the general public of America even cares/thinks/knows(?) about the impacts on the environment (including organisims, duh) of living every day life. Its very sad. :frown: I've been living my life very aware. Im aware that everything I pretty much do does wash down the drain and helps destroy the environment. I just try to keep it at a minimum.

Whats amazing is that we are really throwing things off balance. Millions of species evolved (or were created) on this earth. We all work together to live... and keep a balanced ecosystem and keep our biome clean and healthy.

Equalibrium is apparent through every single peice of life and time. Throwing it off creates problems.

Species die out all the time. More species have died out than there are still alive right now.

Yeah, species have died out over time....Same with species being created and evolved.

Extinctions have been increased since human time though. We have a big impact upon them. Everything we do, we probably kill off something.

Yes, there have been mass extinctions at various times in history, but man is the only animal(at least that I'm aware of) that systematically destroys ecosystems(such as the rainforest) for their own profit at a faster rate than those ecosystems can grow back.

Destroying ecosystems=mass extinction

if we are talking geological time, extinctions havent really increased, every couple of billion years there is a MASS EXTINCTION where the majority of species has died...thats happened a few times nowm and, creepily enough, we are set for another mass extinction some time soon.

but that does not make it allright for you shove plastic cheesecake down your mouth until you vomit.

have some respect for yourself.

silversoul7 writes:

Incorrect. Beavers do it on a regular basis. The "Crown of Thorns" starfish does it to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Kudzu does it in marshy areas. Goats are responsible for the creation of a surprisingly large amount of the world's desert areas.

There are many other examples of a given species completely destroying a given ecosystem faster than that ecosystem can recover. It is certainly not limited to homo sapiens sapiens. On the contrary, humans are capable of regenerating ecosystems. Goats, starfish, beavers and kudzu are not.

if laws are there just to keep human beings from infringing on other human beings, what if there is only one single person in the entire world? can they do whatever they want?

what about laws against animal cruelty?

do other species have rights and deserve legal protection?

We may be capable of regenerating ecosystems, but we clearly don't do this nearly often enough.
