I enjoy stand up paddle boarding. My cooler of beer is a lot more stable on a flat calm than on waves . . .
Seriously, SUP is super-fun and a good workout. It's surfing for the clutzy and non-coordinated.

No. I'm heading out to California though so I figure I need to learn how to surf or at least try it a few times. It looks like a lot of fun.
Hella? Northern California?
Btw how did you do?

I did alright and stood up a few times. I'm in the 805, the central coast of california. that water isn't too cold but the surf is pretty weak right now apparently.

Heres my board when it was new.

Don't surf anymore since I moved back to Vegas. The board now hangs in my garage. I miss the beach.

Been surfing since I was 14. Im now 21. Best life decision I ever made to start surfing. I'll be doing it till the day I die. Everyone always says they want to become a surfer but I think maybe 1 in 10 have a lesson and actualy decide to stick with it and thats really sad because its such an amazing sport thats like nothing else on earth. Everyone else is just wears the bullshit clothing associated to surfing and thats close enough for them.

I grew up surfing in Socal. It can bring you to some amazing places inside yourself, and around the globe. There are few hobbies which can tune you into the ocean and weather like surfing.
It will also open you up to many other experiences related to the ocean. Eventually you start to become a full "waterman" (SCUBA, spearfishing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sailing, etc). Some of the best watermen I have met are usually from Hawaii, Australia, CA, or FL.
The biggest problems you will encounter are the crowds in CA. Seems like more and more people in the water these days. At least you will make some new friends.

I know what you mean. I wanna learn bad. I saw a video once and needless to say it blew my mind. I'd post it but I cannot find it anywhere except on the video I have on DVD in my house, it's a video called MX Anthology made by Fox Racing back in the day, and the video with surfing in it is called Air Raid. Honestly if anyone here surfs, rides, bmx's, skates, etc. I recomend you find it and buy it, it can prob be had for a few dollars used on ebay and it's one of the best videos I've ever seen. It's got like 7 different segments for each "extreme" sport.
I've skateboarded all my life and think I'm getting back into it again now once school starts. It's so much fun.

I walked the boardwalk/pier thing in huntington beach today. the surf looked alright but i'm just a beginner. Where did you surf in socal? I think i'm going to rent a board and suit tomorrow before i fly out.

Looks like we are getting some south swell Saturday and Sunday. Orange County and Malibu should be good if you like crowds.

I used to surf mostly North San Diego Breaks: Cardiff (Reef, Seaside), Carlsbad, Encinitas (Swami's), La Jolla (Black's, Wind n' Sea). Sometimes San Onofre or Ocean Beach (Sunset Cliffs, Dog Beach).
Mexico (Baja) before it became too dangerous. Which sucks, because Mexico has some beautiful places.
Now I live and work in Asia, so I surf around Taiwan which is decent in winter.

For any of you Cali heads on here, have you ever surfed the wedge? I saw a video of guys there and needless to say it looked terrifying and like they had a death wish.

Mainly the bodyboarders do the Wedge thing when it gets big. If I rememebr right I think it requires a South swell for it to pump up big like that. But it just turns into a monster and dumps huge waves right onto the sand. Not really good for surfing, but fun to watch the bodyboarders get pounded!

Heres a little video of it going off. Watch the last 2 guys. First, at 1:58, that dude gets tossed off the top of the wave and freefalls like 20 feet. What you don't realize is that where this wave breaks (basically right on the sand) he is probably landing in just a few feet of water. Guarantee he slammed into the sand hard! Then, the next guy (last one in the video) has the wave break right on top of him. Again, I bet he got slammed down into the sand like a car dropped on him!

damn! yeah that place is crazy! The couple of surfers in that video I talked about met similar fates. One was doing really well, then a second wave just kinda came in and completely engulfed him, another guy just got fucking tossed, and the end of the video is just a slowmo shot of his board flying through the air, guess the strap ripped clean off of his foot. That don't look to good for surfing hahahaha

We only have a few places in the uk and it's always pretty cold but kitesurfing is my thing we have no shortage of wind over here so its usually pretty intense!
