So I'm considering what I'm going to spawn/case to...

The coir will be a minor pain to obtain as we have no pet stores in this city.  I know I could order online and I may have to or get someone to go to a neighbor city to buy it.

I heard of casing to MGMC.  I'm still considering that because of its availabilyt... probably not though.

If I get coir, I need to get some worm castings to boost up that nitrogen.  I've only grown on coir/verm.  I've never tried to buy worm castings before.  Available at hardware store maybe?  No Home Depot or Lowes either. =(  Haven't been in this town long but it is too small for my liking.

I want to basically make a badass bulk substrate without too much trouble.

I'll probably end up with coir/verm/worm_castings or something like that.  What do you think?

Well every strain now has atleast one or two jars showing signs.  Huatla and ape both every jar - will shake tomorrow.  b  - one jar , the rest there are a few "suspects" but too early to tell - but i don't need to check on them for atleast a few days.  Oh I'm mischevious =(.  Finally Puerto Rican' has 3 with signs. will update my sig here in a second of my best Penis envy... see how the mycelium even grows phallus like.

Oh my fucking god... shroomery.org message cache I love you sincerely... you are awesome my dearly!!!

Now I play the waiting game.

So I got the coir situation taken care of.  12 bricks should keep me busy for a second. hehe
I think I may just stick with coir/verm because it's easy and safe.  Unless I can figure out a way to boost the nitrogen without being terrified about fucking it up.  Is there any fool proof way to do that?  I think I'll probably just keep it simple this time.  Play with things later after I get some cultures going.

Coffee boosts nitrogen levels, just dont use too much or you'll make them too high. Do some research on it. Good job on the jars and cool idea on naming the jars, ima do that after my 4 sets of jars are done and I start the next 4. Keep us updated.

Edit: Couldn't remember but looked it up and your coffee ratio should not exceed 15-20% of your substrate by volume, but if you have a way to check ph you can get it just right using coffee and if needed to drop ph using hydrated lime.

I tried coffee grounds last time i tried to grow and it was an unfortunate attempt.  I mixed in spent coffee straight from coffee machine and tried to mix it into a tub that I had started the day before with just wbs and coir.  I don't know what the fuck I was smoking at the time... but I've definitely learned to be a lot more careful.  I do have access to coffee grounds from a restaurant that comes inside a large tea-style bag.  Those might be good?  If everything is clean then is coffee from the machine ok without further processing or what is recommended.  From what I understand, sterilization of bulk substrate is bad.  And that making coffee would be a good way to pasteurize no?  I'll do some research but again, any advice is appreciated.

Note: we have no starbucks in town either

Perhaps Nescafe instant coffee?  I'll look into it but thanks for the tip.

You can just add the coffee to your bulk substrate (coir, verm, etc.) and pasteurize it all together. Here is a sure fire way to pasteurize without ever having to worry that it was done right. You can use your household coffee, and I would suggest to use the spent coffee grounds from wherever you want to get them from, where ever is easiest. Just as long as you pasteurize you bulk substrate right, you have nothing to worry about. Remember, it's very easy to get too high of Nitrogen levels and slow growth, so make sure you research the different coffee teks before you put one into place.

I really like the idea of pasteurizing in plastic bags like that.  Plus i could mix the jars into the bulk substrate without opening it all up to the outside for more then an instant, then mix from the outside of the bag.

colonization update:
Huatla are all 20-40%
APE about 20%
B+ about 2-5%
Puerto Rican about 5-20%

So it looks like I'll be mixing up a tub of huatla first here in about a week.

Finally an update on the ape jar that I have in my signature... the jar was shaken and now it looks like this.  Am I just stoned or does this one seem phallus-like as well?  Weird.  Here it is...

I called this one "Chi-Wee".

Good luck with Huatla. Shit takes for ever to finish.
Takes up to 2 weeks to pin. IME

:banghead:

Wish I could enlarge that Chi-Wee bigger... even when I
maximize the pic, it's still relatively small.

I'll adjust the resolution on future pics. sorry

It sure seems like these things are loving the higher temperatures.  It fluctuates here between about 70 at night to 85 maybe peaking at 90 in the middle of the day.  It seems to mimick it's natural setting.  The temperature is dropping around here anyway this time of year so it is perfect.

All the Huatla jars are at about 2/3 and will probably finish here in the next 2-3 days.  I've never had jars colonize this fast before.  Right now makes one week exactly.  I can only attribute it to good temps here.

Hell yeah.  Perfect time of year!!!

I believe I've settled on my first tubs, probably MSGs, using about 60/30/10 coir/verm/coffee pasteurized  by heating to 190 then dumping into a bucket and closing lid.

Most of these jars are almost done so it won't be long now.  Will probably do this on Tuesday when I have some free time.  The Puerto Rican's probably won't be ready by then, but everyone else will.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I've had to move and start over again... basically.  I have some small Huatla MSGs I made out of hawaiin punch containers.  Other than that I have 1cc of Puerto Rican & 1cc B+.  .  Trying to really pick this project up where it left off.  Let me know!
thanks
