Popcorn- Giving it the VIP treatment

I know a kid with some popcorn jars. They took 2 weeks to colonize instead of one like they were supposed to, but thats' still pretty good... he is planning on doing a 60/40 verm/coir casing, using hydrated lime to get the pH up to 8.5 then casing as normal. My friend has heard about putting a layer of verm/poo on top of the popcorn, i think fugu mentioned it. Why would you do that? Can you just case as normal? And if so, which casing is better or is it just personal preference?

hey lemunhead.
casing layers should always be non-nutritive, as your original ingredients are. a layer of poo on top of the grain 'cake' is a funny way of doing it - why not instead mix the grains in with the (pasteurised & cooled) poo, then case it when it's all white?
sometimes i read of people 'icing' a straw/poo bulk, to keep the frayed edges down, but i don't know where fugu got this idea for a popcorn cake with poo between grains and casing.
good luck sk

Casings for P. Cubensis should be balanced to an initial pH of 6.8-7.2

Yeah, i like to keep them up at 8, because they still colonize fine and i have a hard time with cobweb and other contams if i don't buffer them sufficiently. I don't think any contams like growing in soil with a pH of 8-9, but it doesn't seem to slow mycelium down too much.

Yeah. Brookstone, 25$ for a digital soil probe thing. It's tight but it's a little sketchy, it claims ot be accurate to half a point. I just started casing, but i am happy with it.
