Rehydration vs. Dunking Discussion and Tek.
    #1668500 - 06/28/03 01:20 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I wrote this to help anyone who needs it.
If I wanted the thread in Cultivation I would have put it there.
I resent the fact that this thread was moved, I put a good amount of time into it.
I posted this thread here last time because I wanted to have a serious discussion about this topic, not for it to get buried in newbie questions.

I knew youd see it my way.

On with the topic: Most efficent methods for Casing rehydration.

I have always had good success on my first flushes, but the latter flushes seemed to be poor.

So I moved into dunking the casings which is messy and cumbersome if you are working with large casings. It also, at times, seems make the casings too waterlogged. I had decent results with dunking and I recommend it to beginners, but I was still searching for more.
Now for a solution..

This is what I came up with in trying to think of a rational way to solve this common problem.
I'm trying to keep this simple and to the point.
Say you  had a 10 ounce wet flush.
Assuming the mushrooms are approx. 90% water you have expunged about 9 ounces of water from the casing.
Now to rehydrate the casing so that future flushes are adequate.
Do this by slowly pouring (9oz.) water directly onto and around the sides of the casing. Careful, as you do not want to "flood" or "pan" the casing.
Then which may or may not  be neccesary, give it a fresh light dusting with sterile casing mix.
This seems to work wonders and I have finally attained the repeating, high yielding flushes that I had dreamed of.
I have it heard of this being done but never read about results.

Questions / comments are welcomed.

Note: I have stopped growing  illegal mushrooms now.
I did this because I have certain goals and dreams that one cannot attain from a prison cell. This does not mean I wont be hanging out here and continuing my mycological research. I plan to get very involved in mushroom hunting and cultivating gourmet/medicinals.

Big props to The Shroomery that has given me enough information and love to last a lifetime.
Also a big thanks to all those friends who have helped me out and are still helping me out.. (you know who you are)

On with the discussion...

Thats great advice. I never thought about calculating the aprox water lost through the first flush, and just dunking it with that amount.

That's interesting - I also spray the casing after I pick the mushrooms even if my humidifier is able to keep the RH at the desired level.
Adding the water that is bound in mushrooms is probably a good approximation, however the water is also evaporating depending on the RH level in your chamber.

I, too, thought it wrong that this topic was moved from advanced, especially considering that the following post was accepted as advanced:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1483420&page=2&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

So dunking is not advanced, but terrariums are? I could've sworn that terrarium setups were covered in the PF-Tek, but apparently I am mistaken.

No offense to anyone, but let's have a little consistancy if nothing else...

I did consider the water loss from humidity, and I do add a dash more to compensate for that. I do not think it is neccesary however. The approximation works well.

And thank you Richard for your point, I was thinking the same thing about some threads that are floating around in this forum right now.  :smirk:

Effed:
Perhaps an improvement to your method:

Instead of "pouring" water directly onto the casing, which may end up flooding or panning the casing, this is what I do with my edible cultures:

Place your hypothetical 9oz of water into a spray bottle, and SPRAY your casing. That way, water will be more evenly distributed, and not so concentrated in certain spots with pouring. Plus, this mimics a mushroom's natural environment, as water comes mostly from rain, not a giant bucket in the sky that pours water !

Good thread, nonetheless.
