perlite and water

Today i decided to do a test run on a rubbermaid terrerium, but Im having a troubles. I added 2 inches of perlite but i can't tell how much water and when it gets to 1/2inch? is there some way to judge it or am i blind?

what if i just put down 1/2 inch of perlite and saturate where there is standing water then add the rest..? just an idea..

Best way to use perilte for humidification is to :

Take a strainer, fill it up with the perlite. Turn on your faucet or hose and soak it like that. Then dump into your rubbermaid.

I find with adding your perlite to the terrarium, and then adding water, the perlite on top does not get wet, while the bottom layer is completely wet, and does not serve for humidification.

I use the same method for saturating vermiculite... works great.
