What is the proper way to respond to people?
    #11480811 - 11/18/09 06:44 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I am genuinely unsure.

When someone needs to tell you something really important, or you can tell the topic is serious, how are we supposed to respond?

What is the right way to respond to someone emotionally?

I tend to intellectualize shit, or try to find solutions to the issue, but in my experience, these types of reactions do not help people.

People want to feel heard. They want their feelings validated.

I am not stupid. But I guess I am socially stupid. What is the proper way to respond. Doe a 'hmm-uh' really work? like in the psychologist movies?

Seriously?

1 ) Serious topic

2 ) ??????

3 ) Profits!!!11?

If you're just trying to get out of the situation without hurting their feelings, tell them what you think they want to hear. Just don't stray too far from what your real opinion may be, because they will be able to tell what you're doing and you'll ruin your chances of feigning interest/empathy.

If you're actually being empathetic, it'll probably come naturally.

I agree. Like you said, they just want to be validated.

If people want validation instead of solutions, I'd tell them to go find an emotional tampon (aka niceguy) elsewhere. Cry me a river :astonishedmustache:

Emotions are meaningless, all direction must stem from the desire for the benefit of the motherland.
