What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a bulk substrate compared to a huge ass strait casing..... assuming each have the same amount of substrate ( a 2' x 2' box 6" deep ) what would the difference be?

bulk substrates have more nutrients which can support further flushes, bigger fruits, and greater resistance to contams.
disadvantages: accquiring substrate (depending where you live), preparation (stinky, or in the case with hay, itchy), trial and error (correct moisture content, over pasteurization, sterilization).

My friend always gets larger fruits/flushes from straw & dung than from straight grains. Straw and shit costs a lot less too. A 60 pound bale of straw is $5 and horse shit is free. Can't beat that.

I'd have thought grain or WBS would contain far more nutrients than the same volume of a bulk substrate would. For example, I'd expect a dry yield of at least 200g from 5 litres worth of WBS.. I doubt you'd even get near half that amount from straw. Main disadvantage of putting it all in one huge casing is losing xx jars worth if it all goes wrong. Throwing out the same volume of straw or whatever spawned with a few jars doesn't seem so bad to me.
