Freakiest place to trip on earth?
    #16705304 - 08/15/12 04:48 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

What is it? This place has to be on the list.

Aokigahara Forest in Japan.

Aokigahara is a dense, remote forest at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan that makes The Blair Witch Project forest look like Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood. It probably has something to do with all the dead bodies scattered around.

What Niagara Falls is to weddings, Aokigahara is to suicide. How many suicides does it takes for a place to get that reputation? A dozen? Fifty? Try 500 plus. More than 500 people (and that's only the recorded number) have taken their own lives in Aokigahara since the 1950s.

The trend has supposedly started after Seicho Matsumoto published his novel Kuroi Kaiju (Black Sea of Trees) where two of his characters commit suicide there. After that - always eager to prove they are bizarrely susceptible to suggestion - hundreds of Japanese people have hung themselves among the countless trees of the Aokigahara forest, which is reportedly so thick that even in high noon it's not hard to find places completely surrounded by darkness.

Besides bodies and homemade nooses, the area is littered with signs displaying such uplifting messages like "Life is a precious thing! Please reconsider!" or "Think of your family!"

In the 70s, the problem got national attention and the Japanese government began doing annual sweeps of the forest in search of bodies. In 2002, they found 78. But who knows how many they missed? In all likelihood there probably is a hanging corpse somewhere in Aokigahara on any given day.

The lush, almost perpetually fog filled forest -- is mysteriously devoid of animal activity. And combine that with the massive mountain all but blocking any winds -- the sprawling forest remains hauntingly silent...like something straight out of Sleepy Hollow.

Could you do it? A heroic dose of mushrooms, one night here, by yourself. Yay or Nay.

That is cool as hell. Although the scariest place to me would be the devils pool. 6 inches away from a current taking you over the zimbabwe falls.

I could do a trip there by myself during the day. Still would be really eerie, though. Especially if it had that thick fog sleepy hollow atmosphere going.

At night would be too much. Like just yourself and your trip brain -- with a torch or a flashlight. Imagine strolling up on a decomposing body in that mind state. Fuuuucccck that.

I tripped on acid in the hospital once. It was creeping the shit out of me  but I found it really fun

Like there were all these labs and I was expecting a xenomorph alien to jump out of the vents and suck my brains out

The elevator started acting funny and thats when I REALLY freaked out

Before I read everyone's replies....Holy fuccckk!  Thats super sad and at the same time very unfortunate.  I always think of Japan and how seemingly small it is compared to their population size.  Just how things like this exist and it hasn't been populated.

Sad sad day and I'd never trip there.  A double fuck that...to that idea.  Come stumbling over a dead body and have reality and its gruesomeness slap me in the face? No sir!

Yep, that's the freakiest place. I have tripped in the pine barrens and there is no way I would trip in that place in Japan. The massacring people stuff would suck, but no where near what I would come up with in my head seeing a body hanging from the trees in a place like that.

by hit you mean like what i think you mean right? like killing someone like with a hitman and stuff?

you should probably re-think your life if you hang out with people who hang out with murderers.

"oh yeah just a hit his buddy had to take care of, no big deal. i couldn't stand to talk bout it when i was tripping tho but yea you know, its just because i was tripping but yea it's just a murder. just a hit his friend had to take care of. no big deal at all just ending someones life. me? if someone was trying to kill me i dont know what i would do, i would be besides myself. oh, but someone else? oh no that's just a hit that's gotta be taken care of. nothing big, just murder. just a hit. another day another hit. just a little thing that's gotta be taken care of. average everyday murder, nothing special. if someone was trying to kill me it would be a huge deal, but who cares about that other guy. just a hit. just a murder, nothing special. just a little thing that needs taking care of."

Yeah I heard about that lake of fire -- isn't it like a gas pocket that Russian miners lit on fire in hopes that it would burn out? And instead it's been on fire ever since? Or am I thinking of something else?

It should be noted that OP copied the description of this place verbatim from a list on cracked.com entitled "6 creepiest places on earth." Apologies if this has been brought up already, but I don't have the energy to read through this thread on my phone, however short it is.

Near Castle Combe (about five miles from where I live) there is an ancient burial chamber called Lanhill Long Barrow. It was partially destroyed by grave diggers in 1906 and two of the three doorways were collapsed. The only remaining door has been shored up with horrible iron bars and badly placed bricks. The space available is about ten foot by five foot and four feet depth. It is infested with spiders, absolutely massive ones and there are signs of rats burrowing from in the barrow and using the small cave as an escape route. Isa and I decided we would use the small chamber as an isolation tank, a sensory prison cell if you will.

....!!! more plagiarism

Queensland, Australia, lies a mysterious Black Trevethan Range, Black Mountain.

The mountain is certainly significant for the Aborigines. Kalkajaka is what they call it, the name meaning the place of the spear or more loosely translated as mountains of death. The Aboriginal stories of how it evolved certainly add to mystery of this incredible mountain range. Black MountainThe Aboriginal belief is that the mountain originated in the dreamtime with a man, being similar to a medicine man and also a chameleon, who had the taste for human flesh. He killed and ate a young chief and so was banished and fled to the mountains, occasionally surfacing to eat a human or two from his own tribe. On his last venture out of the mountains he turned into a goanna to escape his angry fellow tribe members and had the misfortune of being struck by lightening. Being no ordinary goanna he exploded and left large piles of charred rock everywhere.  Many unexplained and mysterious disappearances have been attributed to these black mountains. Both humans and cattle have wandered into the vicinity of the black mountains and disappeared without a trace never to return. The first record of a mysterious disappearance was In 1877. A carrier, along with his horse, was out searching for some bullocks that had strayed into the boulders. He, his bullocks and his horse were never seen again. Thirteen years later, Constable Ryan, stationed at Cooktown, tracked a wanted criminal to the scrub at the edge of the mountains. He ventured into one of the caves and along with the criminal both disappeared.

Don't forget to bring the kids !

His chilling story follows. I stepped into the opening, like other Black Mountain caves it dipped steeply downwards, narrowing as it went. Suddenly I found myself facing a solid wall of rock, but the the right there was a passageway just large enough for me to enter in a stooping position. I moved along it carefully for several yards. The floor was fairly level, the walls of very smooth granite. The passage twisted and turned this way and tat, always sloping deeper into the earth. Presently I began to feel uneasy. A huge bat beat it's wings against me as it passed, however I forced myself on, to push further. Soon my nostrils were filled with a sickly musty stench. Then my torch went out. I was in total darkness. From somewhere, that seemed the bowels of the earth I could hear a faint moaning which was then followed by the flapping of wings of thousands of bats. I began to panic as I groped and floundered back the way I thought I had come. My arms and legs were bleeding from bumps with unseen rocks. My outstretched hands clawed at space, I expected solid walls and floors, but could not find it. At one stage where I had wandered into a side passage, I came to the brink of what was undoubtedly a precipice-judging by the echoes. The air was foul and I felt increasing dizziness. Terrifying thoughts were racing through my mind about giant rock-pythons I have seen around this mountain. As I crawled along, getting weaker and loosing hope of ever coming out alive, I saw a tiny streak of light. It gave me super strength to worm my way towards a small cave mouth half a mile from the one I had entered. Reaching the open air I gulped in lung fulls of it and fell down exhausted. I later found that I had been underground for five hours, most of the time on my hands and knees. A Kings ransom would not induce me to enter those caves again. Another strange thing about the black mountains is that a creature is said to be lurking within. Described as being cat-like it has been spotted clambering over the boulders on quite a few occasions. Now dubbed the Queensland Tiger this beast is attributed to the cattle mauling and disappearances within the vicinity.

Now that place would be cool, as it is a tourist thing.  Given that there would probably be plenty of people to help ease your mind.  The twisting and swirling skulls would be awesome...

up until you hear voices and trip bad haha.

I've tripped there before. There's a museum where all the tourists goes but otherwise you could be all by yourself in complete darkness surrounded by bones and it's quite easy to get lost since the catacombs are HUGE.

I wouldn't mind tripping in that forest. Before reading the article I thought the deaths were unexplained or something. I'm fine with people offing themselves since I don't make any spooky relation to the suicides and the forest, but even so seeing corps on psychedelics should be quite scary. I wouldn't do it by myself and at night since you wouldn't get to enjoy the beautiful landscape though.

I think what is so eerie about the Aokigahara forest...well besides the suicide rate phenomenon of course -- is how eerily quiet it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be a sprawling, beautiful forest, yet devoid for the most part of animal activity and and wind from the mountains blocking it. At least from the accounts.

Walking through a dark, misty, dead quiet forest...with actual odds of crossing paths with a corpse is pretty feels weird man.

That would be fucking cool to stumble upon if you're on acid. I'd be all like :mindexpanding:

the area is littered with signs displaying such uplifting messages like "Life is a precious thing! Please reconsider!" or "Think of your family!"

That would make my trip better.

Also theres no animal activity is ok (no bears and shit attacking me), plus its quiet and dark :highfive: perfect

My trip would go very bad and dark if I found a dead body tho (excluding bones)

Capela dos Ossos ("Chapel of Bones")

Quote:

The Capela dos Ossos was built in the 16th century by a Franciscan monk who, in the Counter-Reformation spirit of that era, wanted to prod his fellow brothers into contemplation and transmit the message of life being transitory. This is clearly shown in the famous warning at the entrance Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos (“We, the bones that are here, await yours.").

Think the total solitude would make for a calming effect.

No worries about coming across anyone dangerous if the only other living beings there are there to die.

If you came across someone about to commit suicide, what ordeals would you go through to stop them?

True I guess, but the quieter and more alone it is the more time one could have with their heroic dosed mind one could argue. And with the lingering smell of death right on top of you -- that combination could make for quite the mind fuck.

There was on a documentary on that forest & a bunch of other "creepiest places in the world" that I saw a while back. Honestly IMO the creepiest thing about that forest are all dolls & shit. That + the suicide vibe......... Could you imagine watching those old, dirty, creepy dolls come to life?

Yeah, the dolls! I saw a few pics while surfing of dolls that were hung in the forest. Tried to find them just now but couldn't. Fucking freaky as shit, man.

Island of the Dolls.

Tourists explain the island as dark and silent with a feeling of chill. Almost every single tree is decorated with deformed and mutilated dolls. The dolls almost seem evil. As you walk the island, it supposedly feels like you are being watched at all times.

Something like this place sounds slightly more eerie to me; the entire forest is offered as appeasement to a spirit.
Aokigahara would have an air of sadness; the island may well have an air of madness.
