Coffee filter disks? Faery godmother put hers on top of her jars and used a rubber band to hold 'em on.

Synthetic filter disks are placed over jars and used as a barrier to contamination while still allowing a healthy gas exhange.

My pet Gorilla does the same thing. Works great.

Cool. I think my kitten will use coffee filter disks for her next batch. Do they need to be sterilized in any form before you place them over the jar lids?

Coffe filter disks work well as a pre-filter, but were not designed to prevent debris as little as .3 microns.

Thats true but they work well for my gorilla. I could go to the post office and get some tyvek, but ... coffee filters work fine.

If you had to suggest something for a newbie's jars, would it be just to put the coffee filters over the holes on the lids, or tape, as I've seen some members of the shroomery do?

the coffee filters are used as an added barrier when used WITH tyvek or commercial filter disks.... u dont need them if u are doing PF jars.... the verm barrier will keep out contams... however, if you are doing WBS or GRAIN jars... they will need a bit more air exchange than PF jars, and dont have the protection of a VERM barrier, so a 1/4in hole is punched in the lid, and covered with a filter of some sort (tyvek or commercial) then for some added dust protection a coffee filter or 2 is placed on top of that....
when i did PF jars, i didint bother with tape on the holes, just a bit of foil did the trick..
