Ya that's very true, I hadn't considered the more budget Intel stuff. And yeah Sandy bridge/Ivy will wipe the floor with any AMD. I would never normally recommend ATI/AMD, as I am super biased, heh. But an i3-2020 or better would be a good choice, and yeah definitely at least a 560Ti or around there.

http://kotaku.com/5929067/gabe-newell-wants-to-support-linux-because-windows-8-is-a-catastrophe
I'm interested in background stuff on the computer and I already have windows7 so I think installing Linux on my pc would be a great idea. For the person who wants a computer that does everything though I don't know if this would be such a good idea.
If you want a gaming computer this is what you should strive for when optimizing for COMPUTER gaming.

here's an older version of the requirements with CPU's side by side
EDIT: but some of the motherboards only support windows

If you are limited to $1,000 then you will most likely have to go with AMD cpu/mobo and ATI video card for the cheapness factor.
Agree with virtually everything in your post, but not so sure about this one... Taking a look at Tom's Hardware's best gaming CPU for the money July list, Intel wins at all price points... an i3-2120 @ $125 outperforms every AMD processor on the market in the gaming spectrum, even w/ half the cores (though hyperthreaded) and lower clock speed, the budget sandy architecture chips trumps everything AMD has to offer.

Theres an i3 chip coming out called the 3240 that's just as bad ass as some i7 and 2nd gen i5 and it's an 1155.
i was off on my first impression of a 650 lga 1156, but the 3240 is only two cores doing a ton of work with less power needed;)

but before going AMD, i'd certainly at least consider the i3-2120.. there's certainly a good deal on a socket 1155 mobo out there to pair it with, since it's a locked processor, can pretty much take your pickings from all chipsets including h67...
that's funny that was the previous version of the one i was looking at, I only started looking at it because I found bench marks for CPU's and this one does better on passmark then the i5 650 lga 1156, i5 2500 and its sixty bucks cheaper...

though it does use at least twice as many transistors as the 650, so the 650 may have an advantage in longevity
