terrarium question
    #1668287 - 06/27/03 10:53 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

My cat is planning on contructing a terrarium for a few casings that she has in the works but she has a few questions. She wants to use an air pump and bubble rock for humidity, and a computer for air exchange. She was wondering what is the largest size terrarium she could get where the air pump would still be able to provide the proper amount of humidity for her casings.

Depending on the type of casing substrate used, the casing itself should retain quite a bit of humidity on its own. It also depends on the type of air pump, and what type of size tank its used for. I really dont have much experience with air pumps, but I do know one thing.. dont over saturate your casings, espicially without proper air exchange. Im interested, you said you'd be using a computer for air exchange.. how so?

I'm assuming he meant computer fan. But I could be wrong.

Why would you want to do that when you can use a Vicks Cool Mist that works 100 times better and provides the air exchanges on it's own? All you need is a timer that turns it on and off, the air pumped in takes care of the co2. It is a much better and easier method than the air stone and fishtank pump.

You can buy them on ebay for $10

Depends on the size of the terrerium, if you use an 18 gallon rubbermaid you could do two per one cool mist and it would still be ideal, you could even do three I bet, but the whole idea here is air exchange more so than humidity and I don't know if the output is strong enough for three, so i'd say two. Go to the Mushroom Pictures forum and look at the post titled Antonious by Anno, he uses one cool mist for a large rack storage unit terrerium, and he says the cool mist is way more than enough, he only runs it for 10 minutes every two hours.

So i'd say two large Rubbermaids would be no problem at all.

it all depend of the size of it, i use one kaz coolmist for a 28x45 hydro table with tranparent top, i can put six tray in it and only need to add water every 48 hours sometimes even more, but take a look at magash kit, its very simple to, http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1303334&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#Post1303334
