Monokaryotic sclerotia?

There are some rye grain jars that were inoculated on the 24th of last month with a P.mexicana LC and being held at 80 F with a filter disc top for GE. they are showing signs of growth but that growth is distinctly cottony and very slow. I know this species is slower than cubensis and that the mycelium is not as rhizomorphic but because of the week spore solution that was used in the making of the LC I am worried that i might have a monokaryote on my hands. How would i know short of looking at it under a microscope? also, will a monokaryote produce the desired sclerotia... im thinking no. Any help would be much apreciated.

Monokaryotic culture, that's a fascinating diagnosis. And that's based on fluffiness and lack of stones?
We need some pics.

Its not a diagnosis... i do not know... i am ignorant. its a fear based on my limited experience/knowledge. it is moving slow and i do not see any sclerotia. when is it normal to begin seeing sclerotia formation after the first sign of mycelium? i know that is highly variable and based on genetic and environmental conditions, but what is a good window of time?

Jars look ok. Mexicanae have weird myc. You won't see stones until 100% or later, usually. Expect the mycelium to change color and texture as it grows, that's normal and not contamination.

your the best doc_t... sweet dune quote by the way.
out of curiosity though.. would monokaryotic mycelium produce sclerotia. i feel like the answer is no because a sclerotia is a fruitbody, right?

I don't know the answer. A sclerotium isn't a fruitbody like a truffle is, it's more like a tuber. The answer is probably 'no', but monokaryons are rare and as a practical matter this is a non-issue.
Might be cool to actually produce some real monokaryonic mycelium and find out though. Stamets talks about the process in TMC, it's non-trivial.
