Using NPK fertilizer in substrate?
    #16687054 - 08/12/12 11:33 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all

I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but felt this question was worth a thread of its own as I've not seen any reference to this anywhere on the site....maybe there's a good reason for that...

I already asked this question in my first thread, but that was quite long, and I felt it might get lost in among all the other stuff, hence this:

What about using a NPK general feed mixed in with a verm substrate - something like Fish, Blood and Bone - a powdered nutrient with lowish levels of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphates?

Nitrogen content of FBandBone is 5% which is around three times that of horse manure - one would need to be careful not to 'burn' the myc, I guess - any ratios on this? Just how sensitive is that myc?

Love to hear if there's any experience/knowledge/thoughts on this...

And one more:

Given that the cakes grew perfectly well in verm and BRF in their jars, could that be used as a substrate?

It would seem perfectly logical - in theory...any reason why not?

Cheers

sounds a hell of a lot more expensive than brf/verm

but give it a try.

Could be useful in real compost, but won't break down quickly enough to be useful for the home hobbyist.
Most folks mix up bulk substrate as they go instead of having a big compost pile.

Cheers for that. I should say that I'm just embarking on my first (EC cubes BRF/PF) go, and that I'm a pro horticulturalist....not the same thing, I know, but useful.....

Doc - good point, I prob should have known better - they are indeed slow release, so prob not much use....maybe if I grind it to flour and mix it with a little BRF, add water and keep in a sterilized jar until use (to activate the materiala week or two in advance)........low quantities couldn't do any harm....what do you reckon?

If fungi were a plant, that would be an excellent idea.
