Cool mist output
    #1644147 - 06/19/03 09:04 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I just got a cool mist with a design like this one from wal mart.  I used duct tape to seal up the output and rigged a 5/8 inch hose thats like 3 feet long or so.  When I turn it on air seeps out exteremely slowly.  I also let it run overnight in a 5 gallon tupperware container and there was no humidity and no condensation on the walls or in the hose.  Am I doing something wrong?

I'm not sure how good a design that is... I would return it, go to CVS or something and get one that looks like this:

vick's cool mist

I think I figured out the problem. This is an evaporative humidifier that fans air through a filter. The humidity in my area has been above 60% so whats probably happening is there is too much water already in the air for the filter to naturally give off vapor. It'll probably take something extra like heat to get more humidity.

Nah, you need the one in the 2nd ebay picture, that guy is right, the first cool mist mentioned isn't the one you want.. the output isn't strong enough and I don't believe it has a filter, and if it does it's a shitty one.. you have to have the air going into the terrerium filtered well.

Also, that light on your terrerium is floresent I hope, if it's not you're wasting time and energy.

my friend uses an ultrasonic, but he uses it in a 4 tier greenhouse like the one over at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1529018&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=&PHPSESSID=

He has it on a timer for every 6 hours on a low-medium setting. That provides plenty of humidity. 96% RH on top, and 89% on the bottom

lol - why are you wasting time and energy if I don't have a fluorocent light? Because the type of light makes a difference, right?

Would there be a problem with running a hose from your cool mist that has a bigger inner diameter of 1"?

Okay - noob question time - I understand that there is/are output(s) from the humidifer, going into the the terrarium. What exactly is coming in? Water vapor? Or drops of water that have condensed inside the tube?

Also, if there is an input into the terrarium, where is the terrarium's output?

When drilling holes for the output on the humidifier, is it solid hard plastic that you have to drill through? Or is it easier than it sounds?

1) Yes it is water vapor that is coming in.

2) The terrarium's output is usually small holes drilled/melted along the bottom of the terrarium.

3) My friend takes a 1/4" bolt, sticks it on the burner of his oven and heats it for 2 minutes, and uses that to melt any size hole in either the terrarium or the humidifier (use pliers). For holes larger than 1/4", he burns a hole and then runs the bolt in circles slowly widening the hole until it is of desired size. Reheat the bolt as needed, and make sure you have plenty of air circulation or a vent in the room you are in, burnt plastic is not very healthy.

Ultrasonic is not a cool mist. Different technology used to create water vapor. Just because it emits a cool mist does not mean it is one.
