You got a great eye! Glad to see that you love insects so much! Now I have reason to photograph all the cool bugs that we have here this spring :excited:

I wish I could upload a sound clip of what our one species of katydid sound like here...
They normally start up at about 11-12pm but early hours of the morning is prime time
It's the craziest sound I've ever heard
A mixture of a truck reversing mixed with the old zx spectrum tape uploading ...and the frequencies //pitches....one of Africas insect wonders.

I found this guy the hard way, brushed my ankle on it while mowing the grass. Evil sting, comparable to a hornet.

What the fuck is that thing?
Some kind of Australian caterpillar? We don't get those things in NZ lol... Look at those spines and those vibrant colours.
Lucky we don't get them here... I wouldn't want to touch that fucker!

Yeah it's confusa.

Wattle is the common name for Acacia's in Aus. Wattle caterpillar on a wattle, see.  :awesome:

Dude, I get those every year, but yours are more ornate in their markings than mine are here! The sting is awful too, and unlike a wasp or bee, it keeps in burning for a while after!

Yeah, irks a lot for a good hour or two. The initial pain was mild but it hit a crescendo about 20 minutes later and made a huge set of welts. Still now I have a nice big red mark where it got me. Such a weird creature, it's like a fancy slug. Slugopillar.  :smirk:

I was looking about and there's some other pretty wild looking ones, apparently they're well distributed. I never saw one before today.

You might be mildly allergic then. I never got an welts, just a burning itching sensation for a about 10 minutes.

I'll post pics of mine this spring when the awaken to do their feeding

Awesome, I'd love to see your local ones.
The sting didn't itch for me at all, it was pricks of pain that build up and then receded leaving burning. I put a steroid cream on it to stop any further reaction, worked pretty good. I've had allergic reactions to stings before though. Not every time, but some times.

Lissopimpla excelsa, Dusky-winged ichneumonid wasp

aka Orchid dupe wasp

It pollinates all five Australian members of the orchid genus Cryptostylis. The male wasp mistakes the flower parts for a female wasp and attempts to copulate with it.

The term "pseudocopulation" has since been coined to describe the phenomenon.

Some flowers mimic a potential female mate visually, but the key stimuli are often chemical and tactile. This form of mimicry in plants is called Pouyannian mimicry.
