I love the sweat bees (Halictid) too! One type likes build their cool little sandcastle nests in the straw mulched flower beds.
That's beautiful to read
Your property and area must be great for foraging. They settled there for a reason.

What kind do you have?
I swear I've sold a thousand Phantom Hydrangeas over the years. Right up there with Limelight Hydrangea in being indestructible.

I'm not sure. There were two already here, when I moved to this house a few years back. I watched the pink one slowly deteriorate down to nothing, so I finally removed it. The bigger one, produces shades of pinks blues, purples, all on one plant. It wilts bad throughout the day, and then it recovers by the end of the day. By the time the sun hits it the following morning, it wilts right back down. It also has a poor uneven bloom set, and brown spots on the leaves.

The multicolored specimen sounds like a Hydrangea macrophylla, or Mophead Hydrangea. Some varieties can take more sun than others. When I sell Mopheads to people I recommend morning sun because in our zone the afternoon sun bakes the foliage. To keep them in full sun they'd have to be watered quite often. Maybe mulch it up? Do you prune it?

I bet it's too much sun then. It starts getting it's sun just as the sun is at it hottest point. It's mulched up, and I pruned it heavily right before it awoke from it's dormancy.

So many new varieties of Mopheads every few years that will tolerate the full hot sun, so people think they can plant any variety in the sun.
Hydrangea paniculata appreciate all the sun you can give them. And most will still bloom in shade as well.

Yeah, I have been at this house for three years, and it was here when I got here. I imagine that it's pretty old. So far, it hasn't suffered the same fate as the other one, fingers crossed!
