When they grow up they're a small insect with cool looking wings. Google some pics to get an idea.
The cool thing about them is that when in they're still in the larvae stage they eat other insects, usually the ones that harm our plants. After eating the insect they then throw what's left of it onto their backs and camouflage themselves.
Here's some pictures of one I took a few years ago with the macro lens on Salvia divinorum. These things are tiny, a few millimetres long.

I've been awake since 4am and it's nearly 6am. If my post doesn't make sense it's because I'm not really awake. I'm sleep posting.

A baby Monarch that can be seen munching on the stem of a milkweed flower. The next day the flower was missing at the point he was eating from and the caterpillar was nowhere to be found. I guess he chose to eat on the wrong side of the stem

And here's another one that made it to maturity on the same plant.

Lady bugs like to hide in our house and over-winter. They aren't too much of a nuisance. They like to drink drops of water and nibble on cheese crumbs. Here is one on a Kate bridge.

I found the Caterpillar of this butterfly. It eats plant in the Citrus family and I found it on a Lemon tree today.

It's a good sign. I'm sure it's not getting bigger on cacti and weeds!
