UGH. . flying ants are the reproductive ones too. I hope if that is a female, she doesn't decide to make a nest in one of your pots, Zed.

I don't think so, it was just a stray individual. I am, however, experiencing a major invasion of argentinian ants in my greenhouse that I must put an end to. :\

Boric acid will be. I'm not rich for those fancy ant traps that are effective but too expensive...

Automeris io I'm glad I didn't touch these, once I got home I learned they are venomous and it hurts like hell to even barely brush against those spines

A neat cocoon type thing, anyone know what creature this is?

edit- I think thats a bagworm ^

Is that "Mainly" the type of Mantis that's spread around your area or do you have other species?
I really need to do more studying on Latin in general but especially insect and animal genus and species.
We have the light green Mantis out here. Are those types spread out in other areas up in Europe?

I don't know about the distribution of this species, but given its cryptic look it is a lot less conspicuous than the main mantid over here - Mantis religiosa, a species I've read has been introduced in the US as well.
You had to see it to believe it, this bug swayed side-to-side as if it was a twig blown by the wind. Beautiful and super friendly as well, I hope it stays for the winter and keep my plants safe.

Great pics!
Mantis sway in the breeze here too. They almost look drunk.

The mantis downunder also sway, and no, it's not because they're drunk.
Great picture of a beautiful bug Z!

Word must have spread that life in my greenhouses is easy. Please, meet Esteves the praying mantis (Mantis religiosa), that showed up on my new tunnel this weekend.

LOL.. that's awesome, Zed. You have given them names.. really cool. I hope they take up residence and reproduce for you too. I am envious. We rarely get Mantis here. and if we do its the green ones, and it has to be a HOT summer. Or a (second) hot year in a row, to see them. I guess you could say their activity here is like a cicada, once every few years you see them.

The Empusa pennata is in the "old" greenhouse since I put him there. On weekends I catch one or two flies and feed them to him - he moves very little but takes them readily, I wonder if he'll hang in there till spring or kick the bucket when it gets colder.. My girl named him Fabricius, Esteves was my son's idea. I have to name every animal around me, it's an OCD trait.

Its Ok.. I (name) my plants.. LOL.. That dicepiens cultivar I have is named: (White eagle woman). I can relate. I name my plants that are part of my private collection. My cultivar/exemplar plants I will never sell and it is easier for me to put a name on a tag, and fill out a tag with lengthy collection information on a pot-tag. I keep that information in a notebook, at my desktop office. Besides, I find it easier to interact with the plant once it has a name and Identity. Its easier for me to care for it and interact with it. (maybe its just me). LOL
