I knew this thread would produce some good results. That picture that modern.shaman posted is really insane! I am envious of those macro cameras.

I think the long reign of flowering cacti photos winning pic of the month is about to be challenged as long as you keep running around with that camera....lol

That is really incredible teefizzle! Many years ago, I lived down in Louisiana where they called the Dragon Fly a Mosquito Hawk...

These were taken last summer here in Southern California. The chrysalis is that of a Mourning Cloak Butterfly, and this kind of spider we always called a "Wolf Spider"... They are ferocious hunters.

Yep, most of us would call it a cocoon, but the scientific name is a "chrysalis". It doesn't move but rather serves as a safe place to make the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. In this case, it is a very beautiful butterfly known as a Mourning Cloak Butterfly.
When I look at it under magnification, I think it looks like some kind of alien spacecraft. The detail in that photo gives a magnificent opportunity to see all the different structures and breathing holes. I like this photo very much. I also was lucky enough to see the butterfly emerge from this chrysalis, but unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me at the time.

Teefizzle , that is insane. I actually thought I was taking good pics. You have to tell a bit more of how you do it. I think we are going to have to ban Teefizzle like we did the cacti with women pics. So someone else will have a shot at pic of the month. Also , Great pics NativeEnglish.

Here in Texas this is a mosquito hawk (or sometimes a skeeter eater):
