Easy identification for ya.
    #1667875 - 06/27/03 08:51 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

I don't know much about wild mushrooms and recently went hunting just for the fun of it. I found a weird looking mushroom that scared the shit out of me since it was looking so unusual (the cap was looking like a brain!). Someone then told me that this specie is not rare at all and is actually not poisonous!

I'm just curious to learn what's his name.

Here's a pic of it. It's from the cover a mushroom identification book. Sorry, very small pic. It's the one on the top of the cover.

Thanks!

Thanks for the link. That was pretty much like it but not exactly it. The ones I saw were more dark purple than yellowish white. They had big wide caps standing on small stems.

I watched every pics of the Morchella family on MushroomExperts and didn't find something dark purple. Do you know any other mushroom families that have brain looking caps?

.fs.

I was so surprised of finding something like that! You know, I was expecting to find some non-weird looking mushrooms like the ones that turn blue when picking, hehe.

I found this one looking so bizarre that eating it was probably the last of my concerns. I then realized it was an edible.. oops!

Well, I have a more general question. When is the best time for mushroom hunting? I guess it depends on which species you are looking for but let say, in which season there is the more species fruiting outside? I just don't know.

I live in Quebec (East Coast, near Vermont). I went hunting for the first time in May and found absolutely nothing in the woods except these Morels. Found a lot of dried shrooms from last year though..!

You know, there are a lot of people who are practically killing themselves trying to find morels?

Morels are a spring species, one of the first each year to come out. Give it a month and you'll probably start seeing more of the other things.

Also, before you eat any morels, make sure you know how to identify a False Morel. They have the potential to kill you, so be sure.

Happy mushrooming!

Yeah, If someone hadn't already mentioned False Morels I was going to.

Be 100% sure you've got a morel before you think about eating it. Like ToxicMan Those false ones can kill you.
