Narcotics
All dogs are trained to alert to the following narcotic odor: Heroin, LSD, Cocaine, Marijuana, and Meth. Dogs can be trained to alert to any new type of narcotic by introducing the odor to the dog. Dogs are trained to alert to no less than 1 gram of the narcotic.

>>If the dog alerts, probable cause exists for a physical search of the vehicles interior and exterior.<<

They CAN be trained to smell mushrooms. The question is IF they were trained to do so. I would imagine that most are'nt. Also, different mushrooms smell different, and the acute sense of a dog could surely detect the variance. I'd imagine a dog trained for a psilocybian would'nt be able to detect a fly agaric or some agaricus that little Anny was totting home to her nanny. This is, of course, just speculation.

I imagine that unless they were really sure that they got their dog to smell it correctly and NOT give false positives, then they would use him.

I dont think that it would be easy to train a dog to smell mushrooms.

p.s. search!

WTF is an LSD odor?

Quote:

And it's like a dog can smell whether you have under or over a gram or whatever. That's fucking bullshit I bet.

That right there means you'd have to have a fuckton of LSD in order for the dog to narc you out. bs total BS!

I would doubt that they are commonly trained to sniff out mushrooms.. I didn't do any research to confirm that though.

As far as I know -- and I COULD be completely wrong about this -- but as far as I knew...

(a) Drug sniffing dogs are trained for one substance at a time. They can be trained in other things but they're locked into one particular substance until retrained and;

(b) Dogs cannot distinguish between quantities.

Again, I'm not saying I'm 100% certain I'm right. But I am too tired to research it right now. =0

Last time this came up, someone claimed that dogs' noses work entirely different from those of humans, and can smell things that are seemingly odorless.

LSD? Wha? I sincerely doubt it.
No way can a dog detect a few hundred micrograms of anything.

a dogs nose is extremely sensitive it can smell a drop of blood in 4 liters of water. it would definitely be able to sniff out shrooms but unlikely they would be trained in a lot of places because they dont tend to be on the radar of a lot of law enforcement.
But can the dogs actually smell psilocybin? or just mushroom, they'd be pretty fucking useless if they could just smell mushroom, extraction could be the cure if that is the case.

Wow, this thread is full of more misinformation than the bible.

Smell is caused by the detection of volatilised chemical compounds in the atmosphere, either organic or non-organic, by neurons located in the olfactory epithelium, a small patch of tissue located at the back of human nasal cavities. The olfactory epithelium’s receptor neurons act as sensory signalling cells, initialising electric signals when odour is detected. When a threshold of stimulus is reached, the signals send that information to the olfactory bulb and cortex – part of the human limbic system (a set of brain structures that form the inner border of the brain cortex) – for processing. The odour is then deciphered, storing and matching the information of the volatilised chemical compounds with other known odours and past experiences.

Just as mushrooms contain specific alkaloids, specifically psychoactive compounds, a dog could easily be trained to smell those as well. After a quick google query, you will soon that dogs HAVE indeed been trained to smell magic mushrooms; however I am sure it is uncommon.

The science isn't there to claim "dogs can smell 'magic mushrooms'"

First off, fungi are a very diverse Kingdom and there are thousands of species of very varied and very similar fungi.

Who is to say dogs can smell psilocybin and aren't smelling something "mushroomy" in say psilocybe cubensis mushrooms?

How would dogs be able to smell cyans, gyms, and cubensis from being trained to smell one mushroom?

Would dogs be capable of differentiating cyans, gyms, cubensis, liberty caps, etc. from shiitake, oyster, reishi, and buttons?

There is zero science to indicate one way or the other.

None of this matters.  Dog handler will false alert, possibly even off-screen (in front of your vehicle), will claim dog alerted, will say that gives them authorization to search and will in fact search your vehicle.

Because they are corrupt.  Dogs have been proven to have less than 50% accuracy in detecting whether or not drugs are present.  That means that on >50% of stops the dog alerts when there are no drugs.

THAT FUCKING MEANS that a dog alerting that there are drugs in your vehicle statistically indicates that there is LESS of a probability that there are drugs in your vehicle than if a dog does NOT alert on your vehicle.

THAT FUCKING MEANS the entire thing is a sham and a lie.  It was the most awe-inspiring violation of the fourth amendment prior to no-knock raids.

"Yeah we give this cop guy a dog and if he says the dog says you've got drugs, your rights to not be searched without probable cause are gone."

There will be stiff punishments for their manipulation, deceit and harm against life and living.
