Help a brother with an ID?
    #1667674 - 06/27/03 07:02 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all, I have a ? and I know its sort of against the hunting forum, and so I apologize in advance! I have a buddy who has some shrooms he brought by for us to check out, he said he got them from a friend in India, they are actives. He ate 7 grams dried and said he tripped hard. Now we know that they are not cubies, because the cap is red, pretty brigth red, and about the size of a CD in diameter, it also appears to have brown flecks on the cap, and the gills are white to off white. Any help with the ID of this species would be appreciated! I plan on trying some and would just like to read a bit about the species. Thx in advance

I agree that they sound like Amanita muscaria. As far as good or bad goes, it seems to depend. I can tell you that between Amanita muscaria and A. pantherina (which has similar toxins) that the two rank only slightly behind Chlorophyllum molybdites in number of calls to Poison Centers in the US. Of the several people I know who decided to try them, all of them have told me that they wouldn't do it again because it was so unpleasant. On the other hand, there are people I hear on the Internet who claim to like them. The overall balance seems negative.

The active ingredients in each are very different and have different effects. If you take Amanitas hoping for the effects of psilocybin or psilocin, you are likely to find the effects very much not what you were looking for.

Happy mushrooming!

Interesting that Armillaria mellea, an otherwise(for most people) edible mushroom if cooked properly before ingestion, ranks as 5th.

Oh, well. I have to admit I like Honey Mushrooms.

We'll have to see if splitting them into all those species has helped figure out that maybe not all of them are bad.

I know that the one that's most common here is unfortunately one of the most destructive to forests.
