Help with the Dead
    #1666713 - 06/27/03 07:40 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, obviously there's a lot of talk about the Greatful Dead here, and I know they're one of the best-loved/greatest hippy/lsd bands from that era. Well, I've got American Beauty, and to be honest, I don't like it. I think it all sucks apart from the first song. I'm prepared for abuse

I listen to a lot of music from that era; as well as all the staple Beatles/Dylan/Who etc, I really dig Zappa/CSNY/early Incredible String Band/Beefheart/The Band/Floyd etc. Which leads me to believe I should be liking the Dead too.

Any pointers towards what albums to get, bearing in mind I don't really like American Beauty?

Cheers

Europe 72 is great. I'd recommend Workingman's Dead, but if you hated American Beauty, you might not like Workingman's. I also really like Reckoning. It's acoustic mainly.

the Dead are best seen live, that's when they do their best work! They were never known to be a great studio band. Get yourself "Live Dead"
that should kick things off for you!

The dead sell a lot of live recorded shows and also ticket sales from concerts.

That is when all the magic happens is when the music is playing in concert in the moment.

American Beauty is a studio album.

Or get a Jerry Garcia Band album

Or get a Jerry Garcia/David Grisman album

The later selection is primarily acoustic guitars and mandolin, blue-grass.
Um my favorite album of all time is Shady Grove Garcia/Grisman

Keep shroomin,
GG

I'm not sure if the show is a dick's picks or a from the vault but get yourself a copy of 'Great American Music Hall' 1976.

i totally agree, ripple.

as i recall, they went into that performance with the notion of recording a live album. may be wrong on that tho.

Yup ...One From the Vault......the performance was by invitation only if I recall and it came after the dead took some time off. Great intro by Bill Graham into Help On the Way!
