Psilocybe from a forest in Finland (silvatica??)
    #16664357 - 08/08/12 02:24 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

A couple of days ago I found something cool. Well, it wasn't me, but someone from Finland who posted on a Finnish forum which a user from sweden reads and this user posted some liks to photos of the mushrooms and habitat on a swedish forum. It was thought to be liberty caps but I don't think so...

They are growing in a forest, where it has been cut out a few meters for power grids, and thick pine forest on the sides. The ground is covered up to 0.5-1m with Filipendula ulmaria, Ranunculus, Equisetum sylvaticum, and other herbs, just like any other sunny spot in a forest in our part of the world. Highly ordinary. Some grass here and there of course and the "right" moss (Campylium stellatum) which almost always are present in liberty cap habitat, but it's totally the wrong habitat for liberty caps.

The mushrooms grows straight from the ground that looks mostly like pine needles and composted birch leaf. Definitely Psilocybe, almost identical with semilanceata, has nipples, but at the same time a weird look, somewhat pale, 9 in a cluster and so on.

It might be psilocybe silvatica, pelliculosa or something new! What do you think?

I have asked him (through the user who found his post) to post here on Shroomery, take more photos in the future and save a cap or so for our mycologists. But he didn't answer so I will post the photos here now:

Did they bruise blue? Did he take a spore print?

I don't know. It didn't seem like he was suspecting it to be something else than liberty caps, other people did but he told them to give a proper id or shut up (if google translates it correct).

Maybe Mikael or some other finlander can try to get in touch with him. The photos were posted here http://www.taikasieni.net/smf/index.php?topic=1221.0 by the user "obscure".

That's a shame. They could be something interesting. They could also be something boring like a Psathyrella species.

Very very interesting find!

On one hand, I think it is quite possible this is a surprise fruiting of
Psilocybe semilanceata, considering the presence of C. stellatum, as
well as grass. I have found P. semilanceata fruiting on the roadside
in a pine forest; the presence of grass (very flimsy) was limited to
an area of about 10 by 50 centimeters, so obviously not much is
needed to create a favorable habitat.

Seems to me the tall vegetation might be a factor in keeping a
high humidity as well.

The first row of pictures looks more of the typical semi, maybe
with the exception of what might look like bruising on the cap,
a feature I very rarely find in P. semilanceata.

However, looking at what appears to be young specimens is
making me confused. The color seems more on par with one
of the conifer Psilocybes, although the acute umbo seems to
lack in those species.

Did the finder say anything about texture? I have the impression
that P. pelliculosa and P. silvatica are more tender and brittle
than their grass loving cousin.

Hope to see more of this. Someone has to scope this.

If this is a Psathyrella sp. I will sautée the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in butter and garlic,
and then eat it. (At least one volume. Maybe.)

But seriously, if this is not a Psilocybe, it is still interesting purely by its looks, in my
opinion.

Knark, maybe you should throw this find up on MO? It is likely that it
will get some attention from knowledgeable people.

It's most probably a psilocybe and that means the most knowledgeable people are around here  I would also say semilanceata if the habitat wasn't COMPLETELY wrong... I have found one in a forest before, but in grass (the grass species liberty caps like) on a path with horses riding by once in a while.

The grey color in photo #5 might be because it is sterile, that has a big impact on the translucent caps color.

Awesome!

On a random side note, I once watched a movie called "Shrooms" (I think) where the kids were hunting Liberty Caps in a mossy forest just like this. Then apparently there was a super special secret Liberty Cap with a black nipple that made them go crazy and kill each other, it was pretty amusing.

Obscure said that he has been tripping with these mushrooms, are they semilanceatas or silvaticas or maybe pelliculosas dont know. I have been founding semis in swamp too growing from the moss, just saying.

Mikael: I remember that you did that, but I think there also was a lot of grass in that swampy area, right?

Yes, and he said he picked 6 dried grams, that would mean more than 100 mushrooms.

Yes grass and moss, they were growing from the both soils.

I think there is a very good chance you have Psilocybe silvatica there, all macroscopic characteristics are a good match, location and habitat also fits!

the macro characteristics are also the exact same for P pelliculosa too, being someone who has picked thousands of them in person.

Yes, although, I think P. silvatica often has paler yellowish hues in the pileus and the partial veil is not as prominent in P. pelliculosa.

Some microscopy is needed to be certain!
