Cardboard Cake
    #16662462 - 08/07/12 07:01 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well, I didn't have any verm left so I cut cardboard into small squares, I  mixed it with blended brown rice. But the mix of the wet brown rice and cardboard was to sticky and clumpy, so I in the end put some unground rice in the mix to fill space. Steam sterilized and inoculated.

Is this going to work?
I don't have much faith.

It'll probably work.

As long as you don't get a contam.  You steam sterilized it? Are you sure it's sterilized?  I know cardboard hosts tons of bad nasty things.  Keep us updated.  I'm eating popcorn.

Pretty cool. They are pretty tough so as long as you sterilized them well enough I would think they would still grow, you never know. Good luck!

Well, I hope it works out for you! It would be an interesting substitute for verm if it does. I wonder how it's going to perform in comparison?

+1 on it might work.

(pure white part at the top's just camera flash)
Well, its almost been a week and 1 of 3 have germinated,
I'm wondering how long its going to take to fully colonize.
My temp is at 80. Also, I can fruit it as a cake right?

I have grown cubes on cardboard and newspaper but cardboard is much less nutritious then newspaper as the soybean ink print on the newspaper is actually food for the mushrooms. Cardboard however can be used to clone if you don't want to use agar and is typically used for spawning wood lovers to outdoor gardens/beds of mulch.

If you used only the corrugated fiber of the cardboard (wavy piece in between the 2 waxy layers) it would work much better then if you just blended up cardboard and added.

I am also pretty sure cardboard does not need to be sterilized but can be steam pasteurized because it does not contain anything like endospores which take high sustained temepratures to kill.

I see no reason why this will not work as long as you get germination and colonization. The Brown Rice Supplement will make it more susceptible to contamination so hopefully it colonizes quickly. Fruits should be interesting as I have never seen someone supplement paper with BRF. Probably because of the high contamination vector with BRF supplements.

Lipa has done a few grows on newspaper I believe also.

Oysters prefer cardboard/newspaper wood substrates and RR has been saying for years that Cubes will grow on just about any paper product.

@ Brain, yes it was corrugated fiber, just cut in squares.
I don't think its going to colonize very fast though.

@ Zach, the mix was definitely an experiment, it was to sticky so i added more water, more rice ext, honestly i wouldn't be able to give an accurate ratio.
The mix is a mix of mixtures lol.

I just say that because it took me awhile to get it to a good ratio.
A bit of experimenting (fun)

Week 2 update - about half way

I would like to fruit it like a cake to see the difference in yield from a BRF cake colonizing in the same size bowl.
But I don't know if I should dunk it or not.

If you want to compare to cakes, dunk and roll. IMO.
