Cardboard Cake

Well, I didn't have any verm left so I cut cardboard into small squares, I mixed it with blended brown rice. But the mix of the wet brown rice and cardboard was to sticky and clumpy, so I in the end put some unground rice in the mix to fill space. Steam sterilized and inoculated.
Is this going to work? I don't have much faith.

As long as you don't get a contam. You steam sterilized it? Are you sure it's sterilized? I know cardboard hosts tons of bad nasty things. Keep us updated. I'm eating popcorn.

Pretty cool. They are pretty tough so as long as you sterilized them well enough I would think they would still grow, you never know. Good luck!

Well, I hope it works out for you! It would be an interesting substitute for verm if it does. I wonder how it's going to perform in comparison?

(pure white part at the top's just camera flash) Well, its almost been a week and 1 of 3 have germinated, I'm wondering how long its going to take to fully colonize. My temp is at 80. Also, I can fruit it as a cake right?

I have grown cubes on cardboard and newspaper but cardboard is much less nutritious then newspaper as the soybean ink print on the newspaper is actually food for the mushrooms. Cardboard however can be used to clone if you don't want to use agar and is typically used for spawning wood lovers to outdoor gardens/beds of mulch.
If you used only the corrugated fiber of the cardboard (wavy piece in between the 2 waxy layers) it would work much better then if you just blended up cardboard and added.
I am also pretty sure cardboard does not need to be sterilized but can be steam pasteurized because it does not contain anything like endospores which take high sustained temepratures to kill.
I see no reason why this will not work as long as you get germination and colonization. The Brown Rice Supplement will make it more susceptible to contamination so hopefully it colonizes quickly. Fruits should be interesting as I have never seen someone supplement paper with BRF. Probably because of the high contamination vector with BRF supplements.
Lipa has done a few grows on newspaper I believe also.
Oysters prefer cardboard/newspaper wood substrates and RR has been saying for years that Cubes will grow on just about any paper product.

@ Brain, yes it was corrugated fiber, just cut in squares. I don't think its going to colonize very fast though.
@ Zach, the mix was definitely an experiment, it was to sticky so i added more water, more rice ext, honestly i wouldn't be able to give an accurate ratio. The mix is a mix of mixtures lol.

Week 2 update - about half way
I would like to fruit it like a cake to see the difference in yield from a BRF cake colonizing in the same size bowl. But I don't know if I should dunk it or not.

With all those giant irregular chunks of cardboard floating around in there I'm surprised it's colonizing as well as it is. It seems like the mycelium would hit some spots of BRF and some spots of cardboard and colonize at really different speeds.
(On another note did anyone else think that it looked like head cheese?)

It will work to some level, although cardboard has very very very little nutes in it if any? It's mainly used as spawn or to clone outdoors. The brf should give it a nutritional boost but also incur the worry of contamination before your able to fruit.
As long as its not to wet, which the cardboard seems to be doing okay reabsorbing the moisture, thing should finish up.
If you get a 100% colonized cake you almost surely will get at least one flush, even if it may be poor.
This will not compare to Brf/verm pf tek but it will work to give you a few measly mushrooms.

scatmanrav said: Cubensis dont fruit off decaying trees or wood products well. Cardboard has been used as an agar substitute for starting spawn many times, and theres a tek for it in the FAQ. Mycelium and other molds will colonize it well, which is why its a bad idea to use cardboard in your fruiting chamber, because eventually you'll get mold. And its a bad idea to advise people to do so because they may get molds quicker then you as well.

I think I'd recommend a dunk and roll too. Does this mean that you finally scored some vermiculite? You should mix up some regular cakes too.

Looks fine to me. Smell it or birth it in an isolated FC if your worried. Looks totally normal to me though the discoloration is probably metabolites. If it smells sour/sweet that's not good but if it smells mushroomy then its fine I'm sure.
You will likely have problems with the sub drying out because of what it is made with, and because of how small it is. It might work best to try and fruit the cakes inside the jar with the lid off and a little verm sprinkled on top

It looks fine to me. if you don't dunk and roll you blow the entire experiment :p i think itll work but put off small fruits becasue the cardboard can't possibly hold as much water as verm. thats my hypothesis. good luck man thats neat

I opened it last night and gave it the smell test and it smelled like mushrooms to me so I dunked it and rolled it. It was on foil, but I just put it back in the bowl. They both were pretty damn wet when I popped em out though.
one has been dunked&rolled, the other just dunked (to experiment)
If I get anything close to a good yield, I'm definitely trying again. With smaller cuts of cardboard(shredded?), maybe a larger jar, better ratio of brown rice. Anyone have other ideas for a bigger better experiment?

Yep, the cardboard cakes did indeed pin and later gave me medium'ish sized mushys. If your getting low on verm, I would definitely recommend adding small cuts of cardboard to your mix. I've done this recently to stretch out my supply of verm.
The BAD- They dried out quick and seem to have took longer to pin than verm cakes.
The GOOD- I didnt have any mold problems and was able to get a few flushes out of each cake.
Happy Growing! ;-)

If you'd just case with verm & fruit it straight out of the jar without birthing (like the old Oss & Oeric technique) I bet cardboard cakes would do much better. Cardboard can wick water away pretty quickly. Leaving it in the jar and casing would make it much less likely to lose water before a flush.
