What is the most 'thought provoking' music you know of?

Really...i know this isnt what your looking for, but Youth brigade, and Thulsa Doom made me really think. Acid jazz gets the thoughts rolling' but not in the same sense.

Thulsa Doom -

Everyday we go to school
And learn about their golden rules
They fill us with their bullshit lies
They brainwash us to think they're right

Or

They've trained us to work

So we can make money

So we can buy their stuff

But their stuff is so useless

We don't really need it

But they have us convinced that

We can't live without it

chorus

They're taking over - little by little

They're taking over - one by one

They're taking over - little by little

They're taking over - our time has come

We buy these machines

That tell us what to do

The radio, the TV

Have both brainwashed you

They're tools for the media

To tell us what to buy

The bigger the better

The more we must have it
chorus ; rasta breakdown

America is full of greed

And full of things that we don't need

Each home is filled with useless stuff

Electronic gadjits that have no use

These things are garbage that we don't need

They just feed corporation greed

If you buy less

Then you work less

And a happier life you will then lead

The machines that we work for

Are running our lives

We take better care of them

Than we do our own child

We're slaves to these objects

That we've built ourselves

Cars and computers are

The pharos of the new age

In history they tell us stories
Of all their wars and all their glories
They tell you that our country's best
But never tell you all the rest

chorus

Don't fall for their shit
Don't believe in their lies
Wake the fuck up
And open your eyes
They never tell you the whole damned truth
You've got to read between the lines
You only hear what they tell you
They surpressing your fucking mind
Don't sit their an take it in
Question them and dish it out
You can only teach yourself
Don't trust them to feed your mind

How many wars did we win?
How many lives did we save?
Of course they'll tell you that
But what did they forget to tell you?
The number of people we've slaughtered
The minds we've fucked with our chemicals
The human deformities we've created when we dropped our bombs
Listen to what they teach you, and learn about their lies
chorus ; repeat first and last verses

All music is thought-provoking if you simply listen. Personally I find minimal ambient to be wonderful. Ollie Olson's "Emptiness" is a great example.

The Lemmon Jelly song "Page One" made me think I was hallucinating the lyrics:

Imagine if you can what it is like to have no posessions at all.
Nothing. Very few people are able to imagine such a thing, to have nothing at all.
Well let us, you and I, try to imagine something a hundred times harder.
Not just to have nothing at all, but when there was nothing at all.
The very beginning of time. The dawn of history. Page one.
Nothing at all.
The earth itself with out form, and void.
Only an emptyness, formless, a dark endless waste of water.
No living thing, no plant or tree, no bird or animal.
Nothing.
This is before people. Before anything at all. A void. Sitting silent.
Still.
And then...

Nothing.

The rest of the .ky album is great but that one was a ride.

Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac. Maybe their new album, Hail the Thief but I read in TIME magazine that "the guitars are back." Althought that good just mean it's more like OK Computer.

Peace.

The really melodic, quiet kindof songs by the doors are my favorite while tripping. Like, "The End" and "Riders on the Storm"...thats really awesome stuff.

Shpongle, I always suggest it, and I always will. Shpongle is probably the best thing I found for shrooms, other then cheap $1 photons at the dollar store. This way I can have fun with trace in the dark with the lights off, doing sick things with my photons. I never wanted to use my good ones (15 bux each) since I would lose them or break them. I was right because the next morning I couldn't find either of the 2 photons...
Anyways, I like trance/techno/rave but I also enjoy a good smoke listening to some spanish or classical guitar... Liona Boyd is amazing at classical guitar, get some of her songs...

Hey Root,

If you're feeling Shpongle that much...check out Celtic Cross (another ambient project Simon's involved in) their album Hicksville is what I'm listening to right now.

Also, an oldie but goodie is The Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences. GOOD SHIT.

Basically something like this:

http://www.houseofrave.com/product203.html

Each type is different, but its basically same. Push a button, or twist it, and a light comes on. They're like mini flashlights, just not as bright.
You can do anything with them, from just sitting there staring at it in amazement, to twirling it around in circles...

When I think of intellegent music I think of
Richard D. James/Aphex Twin... :heartpump:
I've been listening to some of his albums for years and am STILL  'discovering' beats, rhythms and melodies I hadn't comprehended.
Autchre and Animals on Wheels are also labelled as Intellegent Dance Music but at a certain point Autchre passes from music to noise with me...maybe in a few months I'll begin to see understructure of rhythm. Lemon Jelly's 'Page One' is good...
a funny thought though= what if someone took a Physics professors lecture and streched it across a  dense dance song...would that be IDM?  :alert:

Have you heard of Shulman? I was searching under "soundscapes" and an album came up by Shulman called Soundscapes and Modern Tales. It's quite good, goa and very spaced out. Almost like Shpongle, but not the same.

There are many good psychedelic ambient artists out there that are equally powerful as Shpongle.  Negativland are way more psychedelic than Shpongle in my opinion.  Especially their "Escape From Noise" album.

I have heard of Shulman, just haven't heard Shulman.

Im going to post again. Refused. "post punk" european rockers. They have lyrical substance, and their music is probably the most original thing ive heard come out of punk in a long time. It makes me think about music.

I downloaded Escape From Noise and it took me a good half an hour to find the damn lyrics. Pretty bizarre album, and some of the samples just make me laugh. Some things really make you think too.
I also downloaded A Big 10-8 Place.

====

Zepplin
Peter Gabriel's Passion album
Unkle
Massive Attack
Aphex Twin
are my favs

Tool is like a drug all on its own. Its actually art, which is hard to say for most music these days.

Lyrics?   Aside from Nesbit's Lime Soda most of the tracks aren't really traditional songs in the sense of having lyrics.   Sure you found the right album?

That's the whole point!   I love that entire album, except for the Nesbit's Lime Soda song...just kinda hokey in my opinion.   The editing they did with JFK's voice for Christianity is Stupid is really amazing...

By lyrics, I mean the samples for the entire songs. I have trouble picking out lyrics/samples without having a reference guide, so it really helped. I listened to it once while searching for the sample/lyrics and thought it was OK. Then after I found out what was being said, it got 10 times better.
I especially like "Yellow Black and Rectangular". Very warped and sounds like the midst of a very intense acid induced conversion.
And also at the end of "Christianity is Stupid" when the song ends a voice comes on and says "Shop as usual....and avoid panic buying"

Oh, what does it mean?  There there, lie back on the couch.  AM I LOSING MY MIND??

You do realize what Negativland is doing, right?  Sound collages are simply brilliant in my opinion.  The final part of that song where it diverts back to "normal" language is the sample that they spliced the rest of that song from.  Negativland has and entire album where all the songs they producer are made from Coke and Pepsi commercials.

Try going back into time and find a band called Incredible String Band. Lots of scitars. Scottich hippies basically. The albums to get are called Wee Tam and Big Huge. It comes in a double album. The lyrics are very poetic in nature, easily understandable as far as clarity of speech, and just bring about wild visuals. Try it, it is a good break from the techno freak type stuff being produced nowadays and can bring about a very peaceful hippy trippy state of mind.

Yeah, Incredible String Band is classic. Their song structures change every 30-seconds. 'Ducks on a Pond' is a good song, but their all good, in their own way, huh?
