Soil sterilization
    #1665342 - 06/26/03 08:05 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Does soil absolutely need to be sterilized? What about casing soil?
I have grain run through with mycelium which I mixed with a compost mixture (from a grow kit, not from my garden or from a store). After the mycelium began to grow all over the soil I put a half inch layer of casing soil over it (also from a grow kit). It has been a couple days now and I am seeing some white coming from beneath the casing soil. I did not sterilize either siols, should I be concerned about contamination? Is there anything I can do should I encounter any odd colouring or growths?
Thank you for any advice you can give me!

I am seeing some apparently green tint in the white fuzz growing over the top of the casing soil.

I usually sterilize casing soil by saturating with water and nuking it in the microwave for 3-5 minutes. or unitl the excess moisture evaporates. then I re-wet with h202/water combo, then case as usual.

It sounds like your casing is contaminated with trichoderma harzianum or more commonly known as trich.

It often presents itself as a green mold on the surface, but often runs deep into the substrate.

It is often caused by poor sanitation, flies or overly moist compost.

Does soil absolutely need to be sterilized?

It's not necessary, but will help prevent contaminations such as trich.

Good luck with your next crop.

Cut it out if you can, if it's not too deep *sends good luck vibes to the wine god's casing*

I cut out the top layer, however, I fear it might have run deep. I cannot see any traces of green now, but it could come back as I don't have a proper method of eliminating it completely. We'll just ahve to see how it goes I guess.

you seem to have two kind of contamination, the greeny and the white fuzz, one is cause by having to much water, to other by contamination, i had this at the beginning, now i pasteurize 7 min with the microwave and let it sit in the oven after at 140 f for the nigth, make sure when you squezze the casing soil that only a few drop of water falls, also you can use salt on trich, do a search in the contamination forum, salt and peroxide are your best friends, you can also read about hippie3 bleach technics, sounds pretty interesting.

oupss, found it, hippie3 secret bleach and salt trich destroy recepie

I am thinking I might try crushing up some salt and spreading it over any green that remains. Do you think this would help?
Contamination due to too much water? I added some moisture to the soil by dripping some water over it (very few) and I mist them occasionally.
Is my situation salvagable, or should I jsut scrap it and start again later?
