My substrate looks gray

All of my kitten's substrate in the jars looks grayish, not at all like the pics she's seen on this site or the PF tek. Why do you think this is? Too much water? Should she start over? Will anything grow? Its only been a day since she's innoculated. The jars are kept in an incubator temp. 78-85 degrees at all times.

Are you using the PF tek?
Different flours will look differently after being mixed and cooked. If you followed the recipe you should be ok. Give your jars at least a week before becoming concerned.

Ok, yeah, my kittens jars didn't look gray until after sterilization. Whew...she'll be happy for that reassurance.

Yeah my friend always wondered why his jars didn't look like the jars in the pics... until he took a pic himself and realized that it was the flash that was making the jars so bright, in this case the mycelium. You're all good Ellemysh.

No, she got organic brown rice flour from Arrowhead Mills. She thinks that she followed the recipe quite well, it was just the grayish appearence after sterilization that threw her off.

What you are seeing may also be bacillus which is commonly known as "wet spot" because it gives the appearance of being overly saturated. Bacillus can sometimes survive the sterilization as endospores and can be described as grey with a foul odor. To avoid bacillus in the future, prepare your jars as normal and let them sit 12-24 hours at room temperature before pressure cooking. Any bacillus endospores that are present will germinate and be destroyed during the sterilization. Or, like everyone else said, it may be nothing.

I just smelled one and they just smell like damp flour. I think I'm ok. For now, at least.

Sorry to steal the thread but this brings something up... I just took a look at the contam FAQ and it looks like my friend's jars have had something like this before - except those jars turned out fine. The picture http://www.shroomery.org/images/23418/bacteria8_1.jpg here is almost identical to what these jars had. It's not possible that it was, right, since the jars colonized and fruited fine?

It's still possible that it was contaminated. Some contaminations are harmful. Others are merely an annoyance. All are signs of unhealthy growth.

It does look like bacillus. My condolences.
At least you now know how to avoid it in the future. See? it's not a total loss. You learned something valuable.
Good thing I have a cable modem for that poster sized image. hehe

ewwwwww it smells..... that one's gone. It's funny though, my friend has had succesful fruits from jars that started out like this. But not worth the risk in the terrarium later. btw it's much more the same color as the verm than in the pic, the orange in the pic is misleading. sniff....
