problem with humidity
    #1664977 - 06/26/03 05:48 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I am not sure what is wrong with the humidity in my terrarium. I have 70L sterilite tupperwear with an inch of wet perlite on the bottom and i have cut the top a little bit and taped saran wrap over so i can see the cakes and it can get light. My temperatures are always around 70-75 or higher and the humidity on the gauge thing only says 50%. I dont get it, i think i did everything right, and i dont think the temperature gauge is wrong. any suggestions?

Here's a few things you could try.

Check for air leaks. If there is a leak, seal it.

Check the moisture content of your perlite. I usually put my perlite in a food strainer and run water over it. Let it drain for a few minutes and add to your terraium.

Add more perlite. 70L is a big container. One inch may not be enough to raise and maintain proper humidity.

Get a better hygrometer. Check your local pet store or contact your local laboratory supplier.

Good luck with that.

and the humidity on the gauge thing only says 50%.

Hygrometers are notoriously unreliable unless you spend the cash for a good one. If your terrarium is sealed and your perlite is damp (not submerged) my friend says that your humidity should be ok.

Yeah my friend has a 96 liter terrarium and uses mainly perlite and a cool mist for air axchange (only like hour total a day). Their are six 1/4" inch holes along the bottom for air exchange and he has less than an inch of perlite and his humidity is always above 90%. You should be fine, I agree with dog that your hygrometer is probably just crappy.
