Perlite unnecessary?

Suppose I have a rubbermaid with an airline (with aquarium pump connected) running along the bottom. I could just pour water into the bottom of it and allow the air to bubble through it. Then provide some sort of platform above the water for the casings/cakes to sit on. What are the chances that this would provide the necessary humidity levels? Perlite makes things very messy, and I've been looking for geolite or expanded clay pellets with no success - so I thought maybe I could just leave it out since I have the bubbling of the air pump.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.

You didn't mention the size of the terrarium. Unless it is very small, it is unlikely that a bubble humidifer as described could produce optimum humidity levels.

That should work fine, some people use the "bubbler tek" to acheve proper hummidity levels. This is done by placing a air stone inside a glass which is placed inside your fruiting chamber. By doing this you would not have to provid a platform over any water.

The terrarium is about 45 litres. Bearing in mind I intend to use casings rather than cakes - I'll need lower humidity anyway. I don't have a hygrometer, I suppose the best way to find out would be to try it and see.

Just bubbling it the way you described probably won't be enough for a terrarium that size. If you can diffuse the bubbles, you will get more humidity. Check your local pet store for options.
I have a cheap hygrometer I'm not using. It's not top of the line, but it does give you an estimate of accuracy. If you want it, just let me know.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a friend who's just winding down keeping reptiles, so he has a few hygrometers I could pick from. I guess I'll do that. Ideally I'd like to find a source for geolite/expanded clay in the UK. I'm not sure if my local hydroponics shop is _that_ sort of hydroponics shop, or if they'll look at me funny In fact, I'll probably risk it and have a look in there this saturday. Thanks for the help.

Ainasko, about diffusion - I forgot to mention that it's airline with holes all along the length (I think it's meant to provide a 'curtain' of bubbles in your aquarium). So I'd get bubbling along the entire length, not just out of the end. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

That does make a difference. More bubbles will increase your humidity. It wouldn't hurt to try.
If it's not enough, you can still use the same terrarium without adjustments. Just add a small submersible ultrasonic humidifier to the bottom of your terrarium.
They produce volumes of humidity in a short period of time so monitor or set to a timer to avoid over-saturation.

You betcha, he's got some turtles he never handles because they naturally harbor salmonella!
As a follow up to this, I went with Geolite (sold as "Hydroleca" - UK) in the bottom of the terrarium (as per the poor-man's pod) in addition to the aquarium bubbler. Birthed 4 into it this morning, we'll see what happens.
