That's either a bad syringe or incorrect sterilization. You spent two years on this?

Come on man, you got us to help you. Try again, start a grow log and we can figure what's going wrong. It's just as easy to screw up a grow kit or presterilized jars/bags and if that happens it's harder to figure out what went wrong because you never know how they were prepared. Mt first grow I ordered some presterilized jars and made a batch of my own only a day after I inoculated those. 3/4 of the premade jars contaminated while 1/12 I made myself contamed. They're hardly foolproof because you still need to inoculate them and that is often where the problem lies.

just alot of money, time, and general frustration at this point.  I'm willing to start over AGAIN.... and I think Kizzle you were helping me at one time in the past.  Maybe I'll just start from scratch and post my results like a blog on here.  I'm not sure if that would annoy anyone though.  I've made much more complicated uhhh compounds before but to this day the only thing i cannot make is mushrooms and its aggrivating.  Again i'm willing to start over and go slowly step by step, but if there is a simple fool proof way, i would honestly just like to see some results at this point.  Either way I look forward to your advice, layout a simple plan and I'll follow it.  Just please steer me right.

yes but those things require shipping which puts them threw temp changes and who knows what maybe someone is shipping a box of trich home from college. Just make them yourself cheaper you know they were sterilized cause you did it you know the moisture is right because YOU followed the directions in pf tek.

i would realy advise against purchasing any 'ready to grow' kits.

if you can get up to the point where you birth fully colonized jars, try using liter bottles. sounds silly, but it will help you get the idea.

gotta start somewhere.

i have all my materials together, my next question is once i inoculate the jars i have these open holes in all of my jars... i believin the past this is how the fruit flies got in and ruined everything.  dont you tape over the holes?  do i put tape over the holes after the jars are pressure steralized?  do i put tape on after innoculating?  doesnt hte tape contain contaims that will ruin the jar?  Finally when i heat up the needle to red hot then immediatly insert into the jar, wont the glowing red hot tube kill all the spores?  Do i wait a minute or shoot in it immediatly?  Little details like this need to be included in instructions IMO.

1. if u have a dry verm layer on the top u can leave the holes open without tape, as long as the holes aren't huge or anything, u want some gas exchange but not fresh air.

2. micropore tape is medical tape...it contains no contams and should be sterile from the factory.

3. after u get the needle red hot, gently press the plunger down until u hear a sizzle from the first drop. at this point the needle is cool enuf to use, but still sterile.

what do you mean not fresh air?  If the holes are left open wont it be exchanging with the fresh air?  am i supposed to leave the jars in the sterile inoculation box?  i dont have the specialized tape and dont plan to get any unless necessary.  Also where should i place the jars once sucessfully inoculated? in the shade?  in a pitch black room?  humid room?  hot room? cold room?  in the sun?  in a clear sealed box?

On a shelf in room air.
We mycologists separate 'gas exchange' fro 'fresh air exchange', but it's a matter of degree.

PF tek + video + search function should have all your answers... But I'll answer then because I feel bad.

Put micropore tape over the hole before you pc. Its medical tape and shouldnt contain contams, even if it did you have a dry verm layer to protect your cakes. Yes flame the needle red hot before inoculating jars,  dont wait, move quickly and precisely. The hot needle will be quickly cooled by liquid spore solution going through it, dont worry about damaging your spore. Put another layer of tape on the holes after inoculation. Tape is not really necessary, but if fruit flys are a problem it might be. You could always just put the jars in a box.

Now I have some questions for you. If you have spend so much time/money, just want fruits and dont care about the hobby/grow process, and have experience with many other drugs (so I would think you have access): why dont you just buy shrooms?

You should start a grow log, write detailed posts on what your doing + pictures, and ask all the questions that you cant find using the search function.

As stated above if fruit flies are an issue use micropore tape found at any pharmacy or any descent first aid kit to cover the inoculation holes.

Then place the jars on a shelf getting ambient light to colonize. Low to mid 70s is optimal...try not to go above 80F. The dry verm layer on top will protect the cake from contams, u do not have to incubate and u do not have to colonize in sterile condidtions, just on a shelf in a room.

"why dont you just buy shrooms?"  i would if i could i have no clue where to get them from.  and in the real life business i own you would think i would know people..  i guess when you get older your crowd of peers has moved on to much harder drugs that dont interest me (coke, herion...)  I would stock up on mushrooms if anyone ever had any, probably is whenever i bring it up, someone always has a story to tell but never any to share.  Sorry if i'm too blunt here.  Also will any other tape work?  can i buy that special tape locally?  do i really need tape at all?  I'm afaid of putting it into a box, due to humidity, light ect..  but last time i did jars they had literally worms growing in them (and white pre mushroom cultivation)

No reason to use micropore tape.  Regular 1/2" masking tape works fine.  If you want to get fancy buy automotive grade.  It is a little bit thicker.

thank you, so buy the tape at walgreens, leave the jars in the basement?  do not put in direct sunlight but flourescent light?

It does not matter if the jars have light or not when they are colonizing.  It is your choice.

Fixed it for ya.

Indirect/ambient light has been proven beneficial to the growth of mycellium duiring all stages. Meaning they will colonize quicker with light than without it.

and masking tape works just as well as regular?  if so i might attempt this tomorrow.  is it ok to use the same syringe that i used on my failed bags? it has about 3-4 cc of spores left in it.  just been sitting my my drawer for about a month or two.

It should be fine as long as you remembered to flame sterilize the tip before you stored it.

Don't really know what you mean by "regular" tape. If you mean micropore tape, then yes, masking tape will work instead of micropore tape.  Just don't try to use clear packaging tape or duck tape or anything else.

I agree with what everyone else said. Use the PF tek, follow the directions to a T and you will get good results. There's a reason theis method is so good. It's because it works.
If it doesn't work for you then you're probably not meant to grow.

bullshit i just listed several questions that are NOT covered by the tek and why my last batch failed.  the TEK is not flawless or made for dummies like myself.

Use sentences. With capital letters. And question marks.

The tape is pretty much optional. Next question?

i readily admit that i'm not good at this process, however to imply i cant read a tek is insulting, the tek itself is not all encompassing for tards and noobs like me.

what bothers me most about this was as a teen i had a chance to try mushies and think i was too young to really appreciate what i was given.  Now older i realize their spiritual and unusual properties and potential.  DMT which oddly i'm very adept at synthesizing, has taught me alot.

Make a list of questions you want answered and we will answer them for you
1)question...
2)question...
3)question...
Ect. That's the best way to get them answered.

EvilMushroom666's Tek?  I just dont understand at what point to add the tape, and will regular masking tape sitting in my drawer do the trick?  The mixed jars are in the pressure pot steralizing now...  I'll take pics once i have something to show .  just getting nervous about the inoculation part.  I have built a glovebox but i'm still unsure how to properly decontaminate it... what steps?  Do i decontaminate lighter and everything in the box?

positive thats why i'm asking questions now, about 6 batches ago the last time i did jars they all got ruined by fruit flies (i mentioned this earlier in thread).  I dont want the same mistake again.  Also shouldnt tape prevent contams?  or will it cause them?

so had the tek INCLUDED the mention of tape i would have had mushrooms over a year ago

the tape won't hurt as long as its breathable tape to allow for GE.. imo. Just use clean gloves when you apply it. If you have had fruit fly problems in the past it could happen again.

what is breathable tape?  will regular masking tape work?  Should i forget the tape and leave the jars at different locations thoughout the house?  Do most people NOT put tape on and have the open holes?

The dry verm layer is designed to keep your substrate contam free. Most people don't use tape at all.

What you want in a glove box is to have zero air movement. You can lightly mist the inside air of the box with plain water, and this will attract whatever contaminants are floating around in the box to the water droplets, where they will fall by gravity to the bottom of your glovebox. After that, simply do your work wearing latex gloves.

Im quoting RR

I would say clean it out real good while you are waiting with 409 or bleach or alcohol.. Give you something to do..

Definitely leave them in the pot to cool overnight. Its way to hot for the spores to live.

Reading helps a lot lol. Patience, I've read, is a great tool in the mushroom cultivators toolbox. I've never even attempted to grow them (yet), but yeah like your tape question has been answered over and over again, you don't NEED it. Although its not bad to have a little extra protection. Ive read that masking tape isn't the greatest cause its not that breathable, in that it doesn't allow good gas exchange. Also... when describing things, descriptions like "the tape in my drawer" is going nowhere, we can't see it (unless you posted a picture), we dont know if the drawer is dirty or if the tape is really old, ect. just saying lol. Anyways man, I wish you the best of luck! Patience is a major factor, try not to rush things, that's where mistakes are made (as with any other thing you do in life). Also, I would wait overnight like the tek says, you can't follow a trek to the T, then just skip steps, that's not following it to a T. You want those jars cooled to room temp before inoculating.

Use a one part bleach to ten parts water solution in a spray bottle to squirt the inside. Work in the glove box with walls still wet from the spray. Some have used alcohol to ready glove box but it should be noted that alcohol is explosive therefore has led to accidents with during the flame sterilizing tek and it is not conducive to mycology to explode your projects and is not recommended.

Take a shower

brush teeth

wear gloves

wipe gloves down with alcohol 70% not 90%

My pressure cooker only holds three jars.  On my last inoculation as soon as the jars were done I depressurized my pressure cooker and went strait to the freezer for twenty minutes and let stand at room temperature for twenty minutes then inoculated with no problems.  However I would recommend just letting them sit at room temperature over night.  I drilled 1/32" holes and left open with no problems.

I work as a full time HVAC techncian so I work on steam boilers in my work a lot.  I just get a kick out of releasing 200 PSI steam out of a 16" main.  However I find that I don't get the same joy depressurizing my 15 PSI pressure cooker.

Not to hijack this thread but one question as I am still learning in this field.  The point of serialization is to bring the substrate up to 250º for one hour to kill all contaminates, as I understand it.  So if my jars have been at that temperature for one hour how will depressurizing my PC right atter one hour increase my chances for contamination?

Keep in mind this is my first grow, but after one hour depressurizing and switching jars I only had one contamination out of twelve.  This would lead me to believe that immediate depressurization will not decrease my chances of success.

250F for 90 minutes. A full 90 minutes at pressure. Minimum.
When you cut the cycle short you are risking failure.

Also, and this can be quite important, when you release the pressure manually the jars will boil instantly.
This can ruin them in several different ways, depending on what exactly you are doing.

I never thought of the fact that the water in the pan will be superheated and well above boiling point.  When suddenly exposed to atmospheric pressure the jars could crack if not constructed of pyrex.  Thank you for the in site DocT.  I got lucky I guess, I think I will buy a bigger pressure cooker.  Carry on.

8 days later 3 of my jars look like this, wet and mushy with no white fluff.  2 of the jars have white cotteny growth

Heyyy hostilityyy.
I have a possible solution.  A monkey could do this.
Buy out-grow brf bags
Buy spores from a vendor
Bang!
Fool proof. You can get. 6 bags for 20 bucks so its not any more expensive than jars, verm, flour ect. Plus its professionally mixed/sterilized.

the 3 dead jars might even smell alittle funny, no growth, no green or any other color, nothing growing, just looks wet and mushy inside.  Arethey dead at this point or still keep an eye on them?  Again the other 2 jars look.... pretty good so far, 9% colonized.

It appears so!
All I can say is man,  if you can't inject *viable* spores into a lab made grow bag, then I have a hard time believing that *if you did* fruit them successfully, you'd be able to put the mushrooms in your own mouth to trip.

Dude. These in your link...grow bags.. as in homemade. Also spawn bags. Rye ect.
I said " OUT-GROW BRF BAGS" & yes they are *nearly* fail-proof.
If you flame the needle and have actual spores I can't see a fail in sight honestly.
& the reason I said don't be rude, your comment to me " did you even bother to read my thread"
Well, you're not very nice to people so what a waste of time that'd be. Not to mention, prove your worth before expecting people to want to read your long ass thread.
Other " problems" folks have using grow bags are associated with fruiting in the bag, which, I don't recommend. Pull out the big block cakes and put them in a sgfc and you'll thank me. Or not.
In conclusion, this is why I named an exact brand of pre- made bag. Because they're the shit.
The end.

2 more things on this brand.
1) you can inject from the top, so nothing contacts the sub. Only spores.
Increasing your chances of success
2) I left one in a drawer and discovered it 3 months later. Guess what grew in it? Nothing.
Not sure if its because they contain antibiotics or if they're just that clean.
This was a long time ago and I don't use bags now.
When I DID its because I sucked bad enough to need them. As you say you do.
Good luck either way but I firmly believe in that particular product.

yes my fail proof grow bags failed 3 times.  one of the three times the bag was almost 100% white then i was told to break it up and move the rice around to further promote colonization, the white went away and the bag turned to mush and smelled bad after doing that.  The last bag i bought never colonized, yes i sterilize all my needles with a flame i wear a mask, have gloves, and even use a glove box.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but is seems like YOUR doing something wrong. All of the teks work !! The Pf Tek is great! IF you can follow instructions and have proper sterile procedures it works 98% of the time. Once you get the Pf tek down and a couple of grows under your belt take what you have learned and apply it to grains. Read everything you can and learn!!! And the only reason that I said "Troll" is because it's seems like you are not taking anyone's advise and just bitching .....No troll here man just someone trying to help ! Buy RR dvd and it will teach you everything you need to know.

Your luck sounds like mine with sclerotia....in my case, I'm seriously looking at the syringes being to blame. I certainly wouldn't use a syringe that's been in a drawer with the lid off for 3 months and expect good results though...

for this lattest run i bought a brand new syringe sealed.  I screwed up by not following the tek to the letter by placing tape over the holes on 2 of the 3 failed jars.  I think the tape caused a problem with gas exchange and made the jar too humid.

If I got a bug problem, I'd stick some tyvek over the jars after inoculation - in fact that's what I did with my grain jars as I didn't trust the single filter

thank you for the link and helpfulness.  I know i have read that there is a very specific water ratio where if the verm becomes too saturated or if the gas exchange is not proper it will ruin the jar.  This is what i'm reffering to regarding the 3 potentially failed jars.

1.  yes
2.  yes and used it exactly as instructed.

At this point i'm curious why no bad fungus or anything grew in the 3 failed jars.  The 2 good jars look strong however, and might end up being a success.  There is just NOTHING going on in the 3 bad jars..and i think a few might smell bad.  I immediately seperated them from the good jars and quarantiened them days ago

Sorry about your luck . Since you have a pc you could always try grains . Are you getting your spore's from a reliable vendor?

Edit: Don't  get me wrong , IMO you should always succeed at the PF tek befor you move on to bigger and better things. It is the best way to learn the life cycle of a mushroom .

i will get many hate comments for this.. but my first grow kit was a hydroshroom. but instead of wasting money like i did, just buy an aquarium. use the water heater to incubate the jars. then throw them in the aquarium with per lite. it has many holes on the top and none on the sides, but the aquarium pump gave plenty of fae where i didn't need a shotgun style fc. i just opened, fanned and misted few times a day, keep my temps at 70-75 and i always got great results from my little "hydroshroom" aquarium. check out that instead of a shotgun, which is still ridiculously easy.. sorry you been having hard time over the years.

Whats over?  2 jars showing growth, not sure if your reffering to me or someone else.  However 1 of the 2 jars seems to have stalled, the other jar is really turning white quick.

I'm now pretty upset to say the least and yet again money totally wasted, especially after following the tek to the letter.  The stalled jar has fruit flies in it!!!  I warned you all this is what stopped me last time and thats why i put tape on 2 of the 3 failed jars....  none of the teks tell you how to prevent fruit flies from laying eggs in the jars.  It also smells, but i'm not sure how it should smell.  The one good jar still looks healthy, but i'm skeptical at this point.

Put a glass half filled with malt vinegar near ur jars, cover it with caran-wrap and poke few holes in it. So you will have ur fruit fly magnet.

Grow kits are a waste of money. Read the teks. I started with a grow kit and have buyers remorse.

3 of my jars had no tape, i was trying to put the odds in my favor.  the jars with tape all failed.  2 of the 3 non taped jars have growth.  Of those 2, one of them is full of fruit flies and shows stalled growth.

What size of holes did you punch in the lid? Can we see a pic of a lid and of jar with fruitflies?

i used an automotive pick to punch the holes, not a large one.  its wider than the needle however  2 or 3 times the width.

All i can suggest is use small nail next time, light taps of hammer, my needle has pretty snug fit to the hole.

Is your house filthy?  Where do all the fruity flies come from?
Are you like some mef head hillbilly tryin to grow in a trailer that is rotting from the inside?
I have seen fruit flies near my jars. But never in them.  You are doing something terribly wrong.  I have used pf Tek (I have to use tall 1/2 pints) many times and I'd say over time I've had 90% success.  I am not sure what you're doing but it's not pf Tek.

It could be they were already contamiated and odor attracted the bugs. I have a feeling you've been using contaminated syringes.

I live in a trailer, a trailer that is almost 47 years old and I have no problem it's most likely just him/her over thinking ....lol....."YEA RIGHT" ...or simply not being able to follow instruction. I mean how hard is it to read and understand ? He/she say's they followed the tek to a "T". I say "NO you did not".
they proved it by posting this

" He/she say's they followed the tek to a "T". I say "NO you did not"

I appreciate your help but your comment is a FAIL.

Where does the instructions specficy the SHAPE of the jar??? if i did i would follow that, it doesnt!  I believe it mentions the volume which i have matched.  How have i NOT followed these shitty incomplete instructions?  the tek states a 1/2 pint wide mouth jar, thats what i'm using.  fails to mention tall vs short.  Also i did a combo of jars to test i also have tall jars, in my mix, all tall jars failed.

those are wide mouth and 1/2 pint.  They are the "short" not the "tall" jars.  Obviously an afterthought at this point, but I realize jars are cheap i plan to carefully break the glass rather than dig them out.

Dmt is easy compared to growing mushrooms of any kind . Shit I can get 1 gram of dmt from
1/2 pound of powered bark in about 20- 24 hours!!! A dumb ass could extract DMT

listen i could care less to argue at this point, what i need to know is the little mycelium that i did manage to get in the stalled jar, can i take that out while its still white and dunk it to even salvage even one tiny mushroom out of it??  rather than watch it get eaten by what will soon be fly larva?

thanks, i think your right, i think sterilization wasnt the issue, wondering if i put enough spores in the jar, did the the proper amount.  Also smaller nail holes.  Not sure if the pressure cooking went corectly or what specifically to fix next time around.  the fact that one jar is going gangbusters is mildly encouraging, but at this point i'll scrap the other jars and order yet another needle.  Any advice on how next time to cover the holes?    Once i remove them from the PC do i remove the tin foil, heat the needle, then insert into the open 4 holes?  Do i then place tin foil over the holes afterwards?  Do i put a breathable bandaid over the holes?  Nothing if they are small enough?  I wont quit, i want to see what mushrooms are like , but this is beyond frustrating.

i just evacuated all 4 failed jars and they are clumpy with the consistancy of peanut butter, they smell horrible.  Other than the obvious that i screwed something up does it indicate anything?  3 of the 4 never grew, does this indicate too much water or a screwed up pressure cook?  Too much or too little spores?  Should the mixture have a nasty paste like consistancy in a good jar 2 weeks later?  the smell was terrible, and i never noticed any green fungus or any other growth.

No 2 weeks the cake should feel like a hard spunge and be about 50% colonized
If you used multi spore soulution .

My best advise is to start over follow the tek to the letter !
All measurement of water verm and brf . Start small , build a sgfc to specs,
With perlite to desired depth . Remember to put a dry layer of verm on top of cake .
Make sure you holes in your lid are big enough for the needle . It's the small things
Plan every step . Watch RR videos of the PF tek over and over . Until you can tell your wife,
Gf , whoever the whole thing

Yes IMO it's to hot . If you are hot in your house it's to hot for your mushrooms
I like about 76f for colonization .

Well first off pimpn , what kind of jar did you use? The incorrect kind... So right off the bat you failed . What was your mixture of verm water and brf? How long did you sterilize for? Did you have a dry verm layer and what type of verm? And since you know a lot , why is 85 a little too hot ?  What tek did you follow and yes I am aware that you may have provided this information already but I want to hear it again .. thanx

Normal indoor room temperature will give the best ratio of fast colonization to reduced contaminants.  It's true most fungi will grow somewhat faster at the upper end of the normal room temp range, but this also means mold fungi will especially grow fast, and they're already much faster than our mushroom mycelium.

A cooler room will result in slower colonization but a higher success rate.

i followed the tek with the correct ratio, i did not invent my own, i cannot remember off hand i think it was like 2:1 or 3:1.  1 cup water 1 cup brown rice flower.  alot of verm

sterilized for 90 minutes, sat jars on container metal tops filled water to bottom of jars.  Saw small jet of steam out of PC for 90 mins, also wraped jars in tin.

PF Tek

85 is too hot because its 5 degrees above 80, should be between 70-80 degrees.  not sure where the hell in my house it is perfectly within that range all day and night... basement?

Have you tried not inoculating a couple of the jars to see if those still contaminate? Could help you pinpoint the problem.

interesting idea.  what would it prove though?  something is obviously off course with my method.  I agree something is not being followed to the letter but reviewing the process i'm not sure what. Also the flies could be attracted to the rot smell and not a "messy house". Perhaps the focus should be on why the lack of growth and bad smell.  I'll start over ..a g a i n.

You'd be able to rule out your jar preparation as the source of the bacteria.

Then if you wanted you could do something similar (like inoculate them without actually injecting the spores) to determine if it's your sterile procedure or a contaminated syringe as the source.

How the OP hasn't scored a zero rating yet is amazing. Being a dick to everyone, name calling, ect.
Aside from the fact that you said you can't handle lab made bag injections, you claim you "followed the teks to the letter". If you DID, you'd have success.
You said " I followed the PF tek raitio, I didn't make up my own it was 2:1 brown rice flower.....
A lot of verm. Ok there'd the kicker " a lot of verm"
The ratio isn't 2 parts its 3!  2 to 1 to 1 .  Roughly 2 parts verm, 1 part brf, 1 part water.
If you squeeze the mixture hard, no water should run out, yet it should form a lump if squeezed .
Then again, why am I still trying to help such a trolly troll?!?

she has asked too many questions, luckily they are all in spanish and we rarely understand one another.  I think she is confused by the jars and wants to toss them out lol.

The answer to many of your problems is right around the corner! Controlled growing conditions will be easier to maintain in the smaller spaces of prison.

I don't post from computer, I post from iPhone (another epic FAIL) and you are close, not on my mommys computer, just on YOUR MOM.
Follow instructions man, everyone here has mad a gallant effort to help you accomplish the SIMPLEST Tek on these boards and either you don't comprehend well or you just think you're better than those of us been growing thangs for 5 - 10 - 15 years.  I personally make a good portion of my income selling fresh edibles to high end resturaunts, since I have a wife and 2 kids to support, you might know my daughter, she turns 15 this year.

oh you mean the girl my 13 year old son was fucking?  Oh yeah everyone has heard of her...

fuckn hippy, growing mushrooms for a resturant, high roller career there buddy.  I see you must be struggling to support that family of yours, might be easier if you had a advanced degree and were making real money.  but again we all have to feel special huh?  Even the teen at mcdonalds knows how to flip a buger better than me, guess we all have to be good at something regardless of how low level it is, congrats your a better mushroom grower than me, lol.

Let it go man. Simple Farmer is a troll. Even he knows it. And as if this thread still had a purpose. DONT buy a grow kit. Unless you like paying middle men to overcharge you for shit u can do.

Thanks Hellyen. I had good intentions and was following the advice on here while offering updates.

I will stop posting updates as this thread as has now turned into a completely pointless flame war.  I only extended this thread to help others with similiar difficulties as I was experiencing to avoid my frustrations.  Maybe i'll post a final product picture in a few weeks if i get lucky with my one remaining jar.  I definatly have gotten further with following the early advice on this thread than i ever did with a wasting money on grow bags.
