Chick-Fil-A controversy
    #16640490 -

a short time ago in a land very close (Georgia), Dan Cathy, the president of
the Chick-Fil-A corporation came out in opposition to gay marriage, not as the
company's views but his own individual views. Of course the press ran with it
as quickly as it came to light that Rham Emanuel, the halfwit mayor of Chicago
spoke up and said "we dont need no damned chick-fil-a in this damned town"
causing a mild outrage since a minority of people in the US support gay
marriage, another minority dont support gay marriage and the vast majority
simply dont care if gays get married or not

As the media runs wild with this story and support from companies such as Jim Henson Company have dropped from chick-fil-a this brings us to the present day, it seem that Mike Huckabee called for August 1st as a Chick-Fil-A support day in which the increase in revenues set world sales records by lunch time.

it seems that when government officials speak out and the media chimes in
that their goals always blow up on them, this was mean to kill their
business and yet they've increased steadily across the board. This has
caused several other companies such as the Nancy Pelosi Endorsed KFC to come
out and support gay marriage, KFC has been in a sales slump, and as far as I
can tell, this isnt going to help because Pelosi has spoke in favor of KFC
Wendy's has also come out in favor of gay marriage and while they have taken
the #2 spot from burger king it seems their sales are also in a decline just
like McDonalds with whom the whole gay marriage/fast food crap started when
they came out publicly in support and then suddenly pulled their support for
the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (seriously?)

this long set up was to introduce us to Adam Smith, the CFO/Corporate
Lecturer, the man that decided to tender his resignation via intimidating a
Chick-Fil-A employee and posting it on youtube. Adam used to work for Vante,
Inc., once his employers discovered his video which I'm sure he bragged
about in the office they ended his employment.  the way I see it, he resigned
he was so excited about getting free water, I wonder how excited he was to
get his pink slip?

his best line was "Have a good day... I'm a nice guy by the way, and I'm
totally heterosexual.. not a gay bone in me, I just can't stand the hate,
you know? It's gotta stop, guys. Stand up." sure adam, maybe not right now
but I'm sure there's been a lot of gay bones in you in the days prior

:smilingpuppy:

when will the media, the opposing hate groups that support the discrimination
against straights such as Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, political
figures and the others realize, if you want to hurt a company, simply stop
talking about them, they've given weeks of free advertising to chick-fil-a
that could span into months, when will they realize the basic rule of
marketing, that even bad publicity is publicity and it always generates
revenues. when Dan Cathy said he didnt support gay marriage, had no one
talked about it they wouldnt be seeing the boost in sales that will last for
many months

A short time ago? The owner has publicly been against gay people for a while now, politicians are just now cashing in on it.

Also, its one thing to be against gay marriage as a personal opinion, and another to funnel millions of dollars into "traditional" advocacy groups to keep equal rights from gays.

My headphone port is still broken but it seems like everyone wins here.  The gays win because the issue is bouncing around everywhere.  chick-fil-a wins because they are in the news.  I have a really hard time believing that people were like fuck gays!  let's eat chick-fil-a!!!!  It seems more like they saw it in the news and were like, "man, I haven't had that shit in a while!"

I drove by a chick-fil-a today and the line was fucking rediculous. All these people are waiting in line for an insane amount of time to buy some fast food because somehow that supports the notion that gay marriage is wrong. . .

Also, there were some guys sitting out front with a huge sign that said "HOMO SEX IS SIN"

This whole ordeal is so fucking stupid. I won't be eating at chick-fil-a anytime soon. Not because I give a damn about some douchebags opinion against gays having the right to get married, but because I don't want to wait an hour to eat some "fast" food.

I personally always want a chick-fil-a on sunday because sunday is the one
day I cant get one, f course it's been years since I ate one and not because
of their views but because I dont eat fast food often, I do recall the last
time I did go there it was with a crew working with me, one guy screwed up
and asked for a chicken sandwich during breakfast hours and instead of the
standard rejection you'd get from other fast food places they promptly
prepared the food and served him what he wanted. service like that is rare
which is why the company has grown as large as it has over the years

You need to know what you're talking about when you say that:The top 8 ways to be traditionally married according to the bible

Also, this company funnels money to Exodus International.  A horrible organization.

A while ago I friended most of my highschool class and one of them was a gay conservative.  It's hilarious how full of himself he is and how weirdly he reacted to this chick-fil-a controversy.  At first he was offended, but now he is supporting the whole first amendment side of it.  He even went to the costumer appreciation day they had.

He's so full of himself too, it's hilarious.  This is his most recent post;

Sometimes I think people over look the kind of strength it requires to be gay and conservative. You give up a lot to voice your political beliefs and you risk a lot in the process. Its so easy to come out of the closet and be an openly gay man in today's society, but coming out and declaring your conservatism... THAT takes real courage, a strong stomach, and nerves of steel.

There was a funny exchange earlier today involving him and another fag.  It was involving this picture and he said it was probably a leftist gay person who did it.  Then another gay guy came on saying he was tired of his shallow and generalistic posts and that he is going to defriend him or something.  He basically had a melt down all caps locked out and stuff.

I don't agree with his views and he is very generalstic but the only reason I don't unfriend him is because the drama queen he is and how much shit he instigates...it hilarious.

Honestly I can't believe how much America cares about fast food, that now we're making political statements by picking and choosing brands of artery-clogging garbage. The social-networking upheaval over this is awe-inspiring.

I'm with the boycott because I believe ex-gay organizations should be starved, but I've never even eaten at Chick-Fil-A. There aren't any in my area.

I look at it as he has every right to support anything he wants with his money.

HOWEVER, if I eat there, then I am indirectly giving MY money to whatever cause HE picks. If I know about the cause, and believe that it is wrong, then I won't help support him support the cause. Its pretty simple I think.

I just can't give a shit about the definition of marriage, I think the government has zero business being involved in it at all including setting tax rates based on marriage status.  But that is not what this is about.  This is about a cadre of punk thug politicians threatening private citizens who would enter into a business venture being intimidated by the man with the legal gun from transacting business in his preferred area solely because he has a viewpoint regarding something that is perfectly legal that does not coincide with the local mullahs.  Make no mistake that is exactly what these punks are acting like.  Mullahs.  Ireanina mullahs and Saudi sharia police.  The fact that their doctrine is different is utterly irrelevant.

People choosing to not eat at Chik-Fil-A = persecution

people going to the business and harassing the employees = persecution

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution

Persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group by another group. The most common forms are religious persecution, ethnic persecution, and political persecution, though there is naturally some overlap between these terms. The inflicting of suffering, harassment, isolation, imprisonment, fear, or pain are all factors that may establish persecution. Even so, not all suffering will necessarily establish persecution. The suffering experienced by the victim must be sufficiently severe. The threshold level of severity has been a source of much debate.[1]

Now, I support gay marriage.  However, I also support the right of a person who owns a business to say he doesn't.

It's really the hate groups that sticks in people's craw. If it was just his opinion then who cares, but he give money to groups that are dedicated to deprogramming gay people. When you shop at Chick-Fil-A you are literally sponsoring virulent homophobia. That goes beyond "speech", that actually does in fact flirt with persecution, and the boycott is justified.

And other people can give money to gay rights groups--that's their rights.

The inflicting of suffering, harassment, isolation, imprisonment, fear, or pain are all factors that may establish persecution. Even so, not all suffering will necessarily establish persecution. The suffering experienced by the victim must be sufficiently severe. The threshold level of severity has been a source of much debate.[1]

yeah, the way i see it is they (conservatives) want to be able to do their thing, as long as you're not gay or have views other than theirs, if so you can burn in hell cause that's what the bible says and to hell with your rights cause you're a sinner.

WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE!?!?!?!?!

STFU mass media

STFU "gay community" (who are they anyways?) I bet most gays think this is rediculous... of course they like all the talk about it- so don't they win in this situation technically?

STFU Chicago guy- you have work to get back to wtf are you doing out of your office? Your state and city is so fucked up, why the fuck do you have an opinion on this? fuck you

STFU Mike Huckabee- you lost, noone voted for you, STFU and go home and fuck your ugly wife- noone cares about you stop trying to get so much attention. Also, I believe you had no clue about what was going on- you just wanted a chicken sandwich and you knew it you dick

STFU CEO of chick fil a WE KNOW YOUR VIEWS and I agree, but when I voice my opinion noone freaks out because I don't own a huge company that resembles my views.

WE ALL KNOW HE SAID WHAT HE SAID KNOWING HE WOULD GET MORE BUSINESS! Baptist Capitalism? New term for Christians priming their own pumps? Yay or nay? :rofl2:

Here are the real issues:

1.) The mass media ignoring real issues:shrug:

2.) Chick fil a's spicy chicken sandwich, as delicious as I think it is after eating 100 of them in my life so far, is way too fucking hot (you used too much red pepper you idiot)

3.) It's overpriced chicken (sold by a Christian-based company owned by rich white and southern Baptist motherfuckers)- is this not a great representation of capitalism?:facepalm3:

4.) those lines were so long- why the fuck would anyone go there? Go home and eat a salad america, you fat fucks that love standing in long lines for stupid shit. "Let's support the Christian view by being gluttons and eating unhealthy food..."

4 continued) America is fat as fuck stop eating fried food!!! let's ignore everything about this situation... and just watch those videos without sound- wow oh wow america looks crazy... wow. kids in africa would kill to eat chick fil a- we do it to say fuck you to the gays haha

5.) Is the food prepared in a "Christian way"? I believe the chicken involved is genetically fucked with and shit, correct? Aren't those chickens "grown" in super huge chicken factories where they are born and die in a small cage that never sees sunlight?

I'm against gay marriage because I don't believe there is such a thing, but I'm not trying to become a glutton to voice my opinion. I also have a few gay friends who respect me for my views because I don't push them on anyone like everyone else. I respect their views. Actually, I hardly ever voice my opinion except when asked and fuck that chicken it's not that good unless I'm high and drunk (which is also the only situation where I buy overpriced shitty food)

C'mon guys

We're better than this America- let's hijack this issue and make it look how it should- fucking ridiculous!

:facepalm: america x10 :facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

Chik-Fil-A is mostly found in the South where people really cotton to gay-bashing. What is so wrong about gay people being married that warrants spending millions of your own money to prevent it?

And don't sidestep the question by using some retarded platitude, don't tell me that's what God wants, and don't tell me its unnatural.

Every reason traditional marriage supporters have to defend their actions is irrelevant, or flat out wrong.  If its because of your religion, you can't use that as an argument for government policy. If you think its unnatural, there are hundreds(if not thousands) of animals that exhibit homosexuality on occasion.  It is for this reason alone that gay equality advocates (the national majority) look down at these people as bigots.  They're rationale is as misguided and ignorant as those who wanted to keep interracial marriage illegal.

pretty strange considering about 20% of their workforce is gay, I know several
people in their corporate offices that are openly gay and they experience no
discrimination, I also know a number of people in the stores that dont have
any issues. not saying that it doesnt happen but since this little controversy
has come about I believe it will happen more frequently

the way i view gay marriage, if I dont want one I dont have to have one but
I also see it as a violation of the equal protection clause based on sexual
orientation since heterosexuals are allowed to legally marry and it has to
be recorded by the states it's only fair that the same be afforded to all
people in the US... and to think, we both have conservative views, makes you
wonder who pushes more hate, the media or conservatives

like you, I believe that what was said falls under the first amendment, it's
his right to support or believe what he wants and I support his right to say
it just as I support the rights of others to say what they want

millions more each day because of a boycott

McDonalds came out in support, their sale started slipping as have all the

publicity is publicity. want to boycott something, keep your mouth shut and
hope others do the same, then the sales slip. how much did we hear about the

I just talked to my baptist father about this- he says "marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman- it always has been for thousands of years even before Jesus ever came into existence... also the Jews and Muslims have practiced the same views for as long as history goes back, right?"

Good point, so I said "why is the argument backed by religion- isn't this a legal issue regarding citizens? Like I understand people like you believe we're all God's children but what about the people who don't? Aren't laws designed for human beings living in a human society?"

He said "God is right and the Bible is true, and the law has always been the law and always should be"

I said "this is complicated... but I hate how I can't argue about anything with you because you pull the 'bible card' and end a somewhat intelligent conversation. Remember when black people used to use different bathrooms and have to sit in the back of the bus? Remember when alcohol was illegal (whilst we both drink yuenglings)? Laws change, right?"

He then went on and on about how our founding fathers were all devout christians.

I went on and on about how they were required to grow cannabis and how they definitely drank their fair share of alcohol. I also made the point that they were all technically traitors aka criminals and how Jesus was also a criminal.

He then turned on Fox News and told me to be quiet

The only one I saw was the guy who denied a permit (completely legally and within his rights) based on the fact that he didn't think it would be good business for the community. That was his right too.

There was a couple mayors who basically said "We don't want you (Chick-Fil-A) here." But they didn't deny them a permit, they just expressed their opinion...which, I BELIEVE, is called FREE SPEECH.

Marriage is stupid to begin with.  People get divorced all the time.  I don't give a shit but we have bigger issues as a country than this.

I was wondering when this thread would happen here after I heard about all this shit.
The owner has a right to free speech but I think it's not good business to alienate any customer base, gay people and their sympathizers have money, too.  They're getting a lot of publicity now but I don't know how that's going to work out long-term for them.  I personally don't agree with the owner's stance at all, I never eat there anyway so it's not like I could even boycott them if I wanted.

Michael Rowe sums it up better than I could:

The Great Chick-fil-A Snake Oil "Faith" Hustle

Posted: 08/03/2012 7:16 pm

Notably absent from the conservative Christian Sturm und Drang over Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy's recent collision with LGBT America (and their increasingly vocal, and visible, straight allies) over his "free speech" to voice his "opinion" is a discussion of the degree to which -- from a faith perspective -- this Emperor is not only without clothes, but is actually frying his chicken in the nude.

As has been pointed out already in countless enlightened editorials and blog postings elsewhere, this was never about "free speech." No one was proposing a law to censor Mr. Cathy's right to his "opinions," as his followers call funneling millions of dollars to anti-gay organizations whose sole purpose is to maintain LGBT Americans in a second-class social, political, and legal status in the United States, organizations that contribute to consigning gays and lesbians to to an even deadlier fate abroad -- to wit, funds to the Family Research Council, which lobbied Congress not to oppose the infamous Ugandan "kill the gays" bill that proposed death sentences for gays and lesbians in that country.

The concept of "free speech," which was designed to keep governments from throwing dissenters into prison to silence them, is never more degraded than it is in cases like these. To people like Mr. Cathy's followers, the First Amendment is a sort of shapeless, elasticized polyester pant suit that will stretch to accommodate any amount of ugliness, all the while allowing the wearer to claim that he or she is dressed in something at least technically decent.

It seems unlikely that Mr. Cathy's "free speech" would be something Michele Bachmann, or Sarah Palin, or Rick Santorum, or Mike Huckabee would have cared to weigh in on if Chick-fil-A had an overtly racist message, or contributed to anti-Semitic causes. Surely those would theoretically also have been cases of "free speech," but not popular cases, not ones that would curry political favor with their base voters.

But since LGBT Americans are always expendable to these people, any attacks on their legal or social dignity is fodder for "free speech" posturing.

It's a classic playground bully's gambit: pick an apparently vulnerable and unpopular victim, get your fawning gang to watch for teachers, then have at the victim as viciously as possible. If caught, claim that the victim "asked for it" and hope for the best, and they claim that the only real oppressed group in America today are heterosexual Christians, and seem to genuinely believe that if they say it fervently enough, people will be convinced by them.

Over the past week or so, I've interacted with some of these people in the comments section of Huffington Post, and elsewhere.

What they all appear to have in common is a type of moronic, simmering frustration, mixed with an equally dull-witted glee, as though they truly believe they are on a crusade for justice. Their posts are often inarticulate and badly spelled. They fall just short of calling opponents of Chick-Fil-A's bigotry "uppity faggots" but many seem to genuinely see their consumption of greasy, pre-cardiac disease fast food as a strike against the forces of darkness in the name of their American Jesus.

Or do they?

What surprises me (but doesn't, sadly, at the same time) is the silence from mainstream Christians, at least some of whom must see what a repulsive mockery Dan Cathy and his "chicken-fried Jesus" cult have made of Christ's actual teachings on love and grace.

Quite apart from the fact that hatred is -- or ought to be, at least -- inimical with Christianity as it is understood in the red-letter portions of the New Testament (the hard part for these people, the part dealing with love and humility) Dan Cathy has turned his rage-filled version of Christianity into a sort of lucrative branding slogan in the service of his own bottom line. He's actually making millions from it, and he's done it cynically, and at the expense of other human beings, then sharing that blood money with others like him, whose mandate isn't holiness, but hatred, violence, division, and ostracism.

This week, I've listened to heartbreaking stories of gay sons and lesbian daughters whose parents have made it a point to inform them that they'd lined up in Wednesday's blazing heat in order to drop their thirty pieces of silver into Dan Cathy's coffers at the expense of their own children.

Any decent American Christian should be outraged by stories like those -- as should any decent person, especially any parent -- but in the same way that their Bible recounts the disciples denying Christ during his arrest and interrogation in order to avoid bringing the wrath of the mob down on their heads, that segment of American Christians have found their own place in this history still being written. Instead of trotting out Leviticus, that perennial Biblical horror story, or the misogyny and patriarchal sexism of Paul, they would do well to look to John 13:35 -- "By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another," and ask themselves where they think they fit in, or even if they honestly believe they do.

If Cathy were a medieval peddler selling relics of the saints of disputable authenticity, or slivers of the One True Cross, or the nails he claims were used to crucify the Messiah, he couldn't be more of a fraud than he is in this instance.

The spectacle this past Wednesday of "Christians" and other, more generic garden-variety anti-gay bigots lining up around the block to "support" Mr. Cathy's enterprise and to cram their faces with junk food on the specious grounds of "supporting Biblical marriage," or "supporting free speech," was a pageant of banal, cheerful deep-fried American hate, unified in bigotry and detestation of a group of their fellow Americans who were different from them, all the while licking grease from their fingers and congratulating themselves on their piety and rectitude and patriotism.

The fact that Chick-fil-A claims to have posted "record" sales on Wednesday doesn't meant that thousands of Americans waddled into a fast-food joint to deliver a "blow for freedom" or a "blow for Jesus" or "traditional values."

America didn't get any holier or more "free" last Wednesday. It just got meaner and fatter, and even more rage-filled than it was before Mr. Cathy decided to sell his version of Christianity instead of chicken.

The man can say what he wants, he can spend his money anyway he wants, it's his right. Like pris said publicizing a boycott always does the exact opposite of what is intended. Not too far back anti gun groups wanted to stage a boycott at Sbux because they allow concealed weapons in their stores, they take no stance either way, if it's legal in the state it's legal in our stores. People who never would have bought starbucks were lining up to buy Sbux. Not to far back, the media said apple basically uses "slaves" in horrible working conditions over in china, I dont see anybody throwing their iPhones away, just the opposite, record sales.
This is just another excuse for the media to try and stir the shit pot, and create a whole bunch of controversy over nothing. So the man has a different opinion, we might as well draw and quarter him, hes a monster destroying the gay community one chicken sandwich at a time.  this whole thing stinks of some DXM induced psychosis. You like chic fila eat there, if you don't don't, this is not hard to grasp.
Do you know the values of every person of every company you do business with? I don't, and I really don't care they can think, say, and spend their money anyway they want to, and so can I. If they got a good product I'll buy it and use it, even if it is made by "slaves" in horrible working conditions, and most other people will too, the sales set during all these boycotts speak for themselves.

Chick-fil-A Anti-Gay Controversy: Gay Employees Speak Out

Posted: 08/01/2012 5:31 pm Updated: 08/03/2012 5:41 pm

Elected officials have urged Chick-fil-A to stay out of their cities, the Jim Henson Company has severed ties, and gay rights groups are organizing national protests against the fried chicken chain. But at the Chick-fil-A where Andrew works in northern Alabama, business has been booming over the past few weeks.

On Wednesday -- dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee -- lines are stretching out the front door and the parking lot is packed with customers coming out to support company chief executive Dan Cathy, who recently came out against same-sex marriage with statements that have polarized lovers of the fast-food chain.

Andrew, a gay 24-year-old who has been working at the northern Alabama Chick-fil-A since January, sat in his car smoking a cigarette and watching the crowd during a break earlier Wednesday.

"I call it hater appreciation day," said Andrew, who asked that his last name be withheld out of fear he'd be fired. "It's very, very depressing."

Chick-fil-A has long come under fire from activists for giving millions to groups that advocate against gay rights and even support ex-gay therapy, but the fire has ratcheted up in recent weeks, following interviews in which Cathy said he was “guilty as charged” of supporting “the biblical definition of the family unit" and that gay marriage invites "God's judgment on our nation."

Now, Chick-fil-A sits at the center of furious debate over same-sex marriage, gay rights and free speech, with politicians, activists, and newspaper editorial boards weighing in from all sides.

The company has remained mostly silent on the issue. On the company's Facebook page, a post declares, "The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender." (On the page, the company also maintains that it severed ties with the Jim Henson Company, first). The company did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Huffington Post, and Dan Cathy has not given any subsequent interviews since the controversy began.

Another group staying mostly silent on the issue are the gay, lesbian and bisexual employees who staff the restaurants. They say that, like most employees of the company, they aren't allowed to speak to the press.

For these employees, the last couple of weeks have been very difficult.

One gay employee who works at Chick-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., and asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing his job, says he is getting it from both sides. On the one hand, there is the customer who came in and said he supported Dan Cathy and then "continues to say something truly homophobic, e.g. 'I'm so glad you don't support the queers, I can eat in peace,'" the employee, who is 23 and has worked for Chick-fil-A since he was 16, wrote in an email. On the other hand, he continued, "I was yelled at for being a god-loving, conservative, homophobic Christian while walking some food out to a guest in a mall dining room."

He disagrees with Cathy's views, but the reaction from the public has been just as hard to swallow.

"It seems like very few people have stopped to think about who actually works for Chick-fil-A and what those people's opinions are," he wrote. "They are putting us in a pot and coming to support us or hate us based on something they heard and assume we agree with."

Gabriel Aguiniga, a gay employee at a Chick-fil-A in Colorado, also said the hardest part hasn't been hearing Cathy's comments. Instead, "[it's] constantly having people come up to you and say, 'I support your company, because your company hates the gays,'" Aguiniga, 18, wrote in an email. "It really takes a toll on me."

Management is encouraging employees at the stores to remain neutral, no matter what customers say, according to multiple workers interviewed by The Huffington Post.

"Our managers have recommended just saying 'Thank you for your business' if a customer says they agree with Cathy’s comments, rather than agreeing or disagreeing with them," K, an openly gay Chick-fil-A employee in Louisiana, told HuffPost in an email.

But staying neutral can be difficult when it feels like the world is passing judgment on everyone associated with the company.

"Now, anyone that works there is stuck with a stigma of being homophobic, even when many of us are far from it," K said. One of her coworkers, who supports same-sex marriage, has had people say things like, “Don’t give me that hate sh*t,” and “I hope you choke on that chicken," while she was handing out samples.

But for K, the hardest part hasn't been the actions of customers and protesters, it's the money the company gives to anti-gay groups.

"At the end of the day part of our profits still go towards Dan Cathy, and subsequently, all the organizations he supports," she said. K is now actively searching for work elsewhere. Many of her coworkers, she said, are looking for new jobs, too.

The groups Chick-fil-A gives to include the Family Research Council and Exodus International, according to Equality Matters, an initiative associated with the progressive Watchdog group, Media Matters. The Family Research Council is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, while Exodus International is a Christian Ministry that has long endorsed ex-gay therapy, a controversial practice of "curing" gay people that mainstream mental health organizations have disavowed. (In recent months, the president of Exodus has tried to distance his group from the idea that gay people can be "cured.")

Several of the gay and lesbian employees interviewed by The Huffington Post said that they liked their work, and had never witnessed incidents of homophobia or discrimination on the job. But Chick-fil-A restaurants are operated by independent owners, and employee experience can vary widely depending on the person running a particular chain.

Kellie, a 23-year-old gay woman from Georgia who also requested her last name be withheld for fear of being outed in the press, worked at two different Chick-fil-A locations in Georgia. She loved working at the first location, she said, where nobody ever said anything homophobic or discriminatory. But at the second location, in Atlanta, "there was a lot of general homophobia." Managers would frequently make homophobic jokes, she said, and she felt that if she were to tell her colleagues she was gay, she would be fired. Eventually, she quit.

Another former employee, who worked at the Chick-fil-A in Chicago, said he thought the culture of the company encouraged homophobia.

"It's a very monochromatic, white, male driven company," said Andrew Mullen, a gay 26-year-old who quit his job last winter after less than a year with the company. Once, Andrew recalled, a company operator leading an employee training session, saw two men kissing on the patio outside the restaurant and proclaimed to the group he was leading that he thought it was "disgusting." Mullen later told the person in charge of corporate training about the incident, and the man was fired. "[This person] was very apologetic for it, and there are a few people here like that, but from what I saw, it's a predominantly pro-ignorant culture."

But the gay employee who works at headquarters in Atlanta disagreed with this assessment. Aside from the occasional homophobic joke or comment outside of working hours, he said, his experience with the company has been "extremely positive."

Asked in June, Andrew, the employee in Alabama, would have said his experience was positive, too. He had never explicitly told any of his colleagues he was gay, but he felt comfortable at work and liked the operator of his store. But recently, Andrew says the atmosphere at work has grown nearly intolerable. Although plenty of his coworkers have said they don't agree with Cathy's views, on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," one colleague told him proudly that his friends would be eating the fried chicken sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Last week, when he went out to the parking lot to help a trucker (not directly employed by Chick-fil-A) unload a shipment of goods, the trucker turned to Andrew confidentially and said, "If I see one more faggot at a Chick-fil-A protesting, I'm going to be sick."

"I just looked at him and said, 'I don't want to hear that,'" Andrew recalled. "I thought, Chick-fil-A doesn't promote hatred, we don't cuss and we don't hate," he continued. But experiences over the last couple of weeks have shifted his views: "Honestly, I really wish they would just go out of business, I do."

This is patently absurd:

Prison is not the only method at the government's disposal to stifle free speech.  Withholding of permits, increasing regulatory requirements for those who voice certain unapproved opinions, officially voicing opposition to a franchise diminishes the pool of potential franchisees.  Consider the case of the Skokie Ill Nazi parade.  These are vile, fringe nutcases but they cannot be required by the government to comply with any more rules than anybody else who wishes to have a parade.  To do so is to squelch their free speech rights.

What a fucking drama queen.  "At the expense of their own children?"  Spare me.  Some people (most of the country) think marriage is between a man and a woman.  That's it.  Tough shit.  Me?  I think the government should not be involved at all except to supervise a legal dissolution of the contract.  No privileges or penalties for people who decide to enter into a contract.  But that isn't the deal.

I wonder what this guy had to say about what scumbags people who hold a traditional view of marriage are when that was Obama's position.  Hell, it still might be his position.  He just came out of the closet as a states' rights guy on this issue.  Funny thing is he isn't much for states' rights about anything else.
