Cactus tearing... ?
    #1663193 - 06/26/03 01:46 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

hi fellows!
it's happening that some columnar cacti of mine are having their flesh teared vertically...
have you guys ever seen it happen? these cacti are outdoors, perhaps they've got too much water from rain or something... it doesn't seems to be harmful to the cacti but i'd like to avoid it if possible!

though too much water might be the cause of this...high nitrogen levels are knows to cause splitting. hope that helps.

in the background you can see a splitting monstrose pilosocereus. before anyone ask, the ones in the foreground are t. glaucus.

My cacti will split if they are receiving too much water. If this is happening because you are watering it is easy to stop. Ifyour plants are out in the garden and rain is the culprit...the danger is that the cactus can rot if it doesn't have a chance to dry out.

thanks guys!
i'm gonna put the splitting cactus vases protected from the rain...
also, in the case of that piloso, ive twisted off a handful of pups out of it and they had lots of mealy bugs, which i managed to kill with a good recipe (see my post 'killer recipe agains mealy bugs')... perhaps this added too much vigour to its growth, helping it to split even more and start to split at the base...
