What does Gymnopilus sp. and Panaeolus sp. Actually mean?

Well it says panaeolus cinctulus, gymnopilus luteofolius, gymnopilus junonius grow in my area. It also says gymnopilus sp. and panaeolus sp. also grow in my area. Does that mean there are non-active gymnopilus' and non-active panaeolus?

It means that at some point some specimen was found that was active, and was IDed to genus, but not to species.

I think it implies that panaeolus and gymnopilus are commonly active genera, meaning you might find gymnopilus aeruginosus or other less common actives such as panaeolus olivaceus.

When you say "it" says do you mean the "what actives grow in my area"?

The word species is sometimes abbreviated to sp.
This abbreviation does not imply that a mushroom is active.
It can be used in any genus (for example, Agaricus, Parasola, Stropharia, Psilocybe, etc).
It is sometimes much easier to identify a mushroom to genus (versus genus and species).
It is identical to say, for example, "It's a Stropharia," "It's a Stropharia species," and "It's a Stropharia sp."

dude, don't take what I say out of context. I wasn't saying that "sp." has anything to do with activity, but if it is listed on the "Which psilocybin mushrooms grow wild in my area?" And they are listed as gymnopilus sp. and panaeolus sp. then yes it is referring to active genera that have been found to grow in that area.
