The old suck and blow to speed colonization!

My friend likes to use tyvek filter discs to cover his grain spawn, just secured with the jar rings. It helps facilitate air exchange which makes popcorn colonize fast as hell, My friend was wondering if he should suck/blow through the tyvek discs to get even more air to exchange. This could make them colonize even faster, theoretically. What do you guys think?

you'd basically just be adding CO2, i don't see it helping.

If you used polypropelne you could simply squeeze the container, to draw in fresh air. Although I wouldnt advise it. It surely increases the risk of contamination. Make sure those filters are fitted pefect before hand.

Sounds like i should just tell my friend to let em sit. They are colonizing fine anyways.

I dont know, it was a legit question.. can any of the experts comment on how air exchange effects colinization? Perhaps blowing on them would increase it, but by how much, and would it be worth the contam risk, even with tyvek disks...?

Breath contains all sorts of possible contaminants to a colonizing jar. I would just let them develop without trying to rush it along. Better to have slower growth than contaminaion any day.

still dident answer my question though, I realize what you say right, but I am looking for actuall effects it would have on mycelium growth

I think if you blow or force air in it you are more likly chance to get contams cause the air presure will open the filter pores up more then need and then contams are more able to get in. I would just leave it breath for itself if you ask me

Psilocybin_monkey that is by far one of the freakiest avatars I have seen.
I've never thought of breathing in air thru a filter... best to leave things the way they are, "if it ain't broke don't fix it!"

colonizations are fastest when the mycellium has high concentrations of CO2. One of the things that triggers fruiting is exposure to fresh air.
If you want air exchange, it's best left for the fruiting stage.

Thank you Raadt. Why then does colonization occur so much faster when you use filter disks? Because you are getting less c02. I have heard that Stamets and other experts recomend high Co2 for colonization, but when you actually try doing jars with no air exchange, it doesn't work very well. Why is this?

not so much as high co2 I belive its "no more than 2000 ppm". mycelia need o2 as does every living thing. giving it 0 air exchange would be detrimental to the colonization rate. Filter disks allow proper air exchange if done properly. if done improperly then the chance of the substrate drying out becomes a concern, and that too becomes a problem for mycelia growth.

Actually if I remember correctly exhaled breath still has a concentration of ~16% of O2...that's why CPR is able to sustain life. At least that's what my CPR instructor said. Of course, you'd still be exhaling all kinds of junk besides oxygen (germs). You wouldn't want to exhale one of your spores, and have a little You running around now, would you? *first post on Advanced board*
