Needs, desires and preferences

What is the difference between a need, a desire, a preference, and an opinion?
Is it just that desires, preferences and opinions can be changed, and needs can never be changed? But in that case, how do you know if a strong desire is in fact not a need until you have managed to rid yourself of it?

Needs: Things you cannot survive without, ex: Food, Water, Shelter to sleep in (whether it be a non windy field or a mansion on the hill)
Desires: Something you want. It can be world peace, those new scooby-doos, or a ham sandwich. If you want it, it's a desire...
Preferences: This one's a little harder to explain... A preference is the more favorable desire out of two or more objects / outcomes.
Opinion: Something too many fuckin' people have. Seriously though, an opinion is the sharing of your beliefs on a subject based on your experience up to your present frame of reference. Generally, opinions should be taken as such: opinions. They are never fact, though can be based off of several facts, making them more correct than other opinions.
How's that Rhizoid? Did I do ok?

Absolutely, those are good definitions
But what do we say about people who sacrifice their lives in order to help others, or in order to promote an idea (not necessarily good ideas, and not necessarily in a morally acceptable way). Are those examples of desire that is stronger than need, or is there something even more primal than need?
And what about a drug preference that evolves into an addiction. Is that a need or "just" a desire?

Even needs change according to society. Hot running water or even a refigerator or deodorant may be considered a need in western countries. They are NOT fixed at all like you make them sound. Can you survive in NYC without money like you might in the Amazon? As always, relativity applies.

Well then you would have a desire that your brain has wrongly classified it as a need, or the drug has altered your brain to make it a need, but it doesnt always have to stay a need. This is why very addictive things shouldnt be fucked aroudn with.

Very good points guys.. I appreciate the correction Swami - I was kinda going for something like that but at the time I had just gotten off work and wasn't feeling very descriptive
