Is there a noticable difference in potency between shrooms picked before the veil breaks and after? for example, would 3 grams of shrooms picked before the veil broke make you trip harder than 3 grams of shrooms picked after the veil broke?

PF said in his tek to pluck the shroom before the veil breaks for the most potency. Whether this is true or not, I cannot say.

i think that it is just to eat less material...after the veil opens, the mushroom do not produce more psilocybin and don't loose anything too...

Only if the 3 grams of unbroken veils had a higher content of psylocibin to begin with. It's all in the genetics. Once the veil breaks and the cap starts to open, the literature says the psylocibin production ends so the energy of the fruit body can concentrate on reproducing by dropping its spores. I would only allow my largest fruit bodies to open to full caps so I could make prints. The rest of the shrooms would get picked as soon as the veil started to tear. Of course...sometimes the timing is just off. You can go to bed one night with all your mushies tightly closed and BOOM, in the morning all the veils have opened.  Nice surprises await you in the morning that way...especially when they burst in both size and growth rate.

I've never been convinced that there's much difference between picking before or after the veil breaks. Sometimes when I go away and don't have a chance to pick I come back to shrooms that have been open for days, sometimes with caps starting to crack up and fall apart.. they're never noticably weaker..

For maximum yield and potency, it would be better to pick before the veils completely open. This is not to say that carpophores (caps and stems) are more potent than those with veils that have opened. After spores have dropped, the mushroom has reached the end of its life cycle and will begin to degrade.
It one were to consume two grams of aborts, two grams of shrooms before the veils open and two grams of shrooms after they open it is unlikely that one would notice a difference as the difference is marginal.

I would say yes potency is reduced. ever break a fresh shroom in half? if you do youwill notice its very fibrous, almost like muslce fibers in way. As it gets bigger, the space between them widens, letting oxygen into them, thus, the mushroom blues inside. lots of big shrooms are blue inside.
