No.. the train left because you left this long rant AGAIN about the cost of a server vs a gaming rig. People don't overclock servers. Servers are not gaming systems. STOP COMPARING THEM. I only ever brought up servers because you did.
Now that that's out of the way. I never said you HAVE to spend 2k plus to build a good gaming system. Just that working in the computer industry (the company that makes your GPU), I see it ALL THE TIME. You can easily build a good gaming system for ~1,500 or even less with all high quality parts.
Like the build you just listed. Good quality components, and you didn't break 2k. Congrats. You have a high end gaming rig.
Your build is very similar to my build with a better GPU. You know what I spent on it? 800. But that's only because I won the PSU and SSD in a contest, and bought the CPU, motherboard, corsair cooler, RAM and monitor from a friend.... only a week old for a cheap ass price. Had I bought everything brand new it would have run about $1700-1800.
Once again, I never said you HAVE to spend 2k plus to build a good gaming system, just that I see it all the time.
You add a couple Cherryville SSDs to your list, and another 680 for SLI and you are easily pushing $2,600 on that build, which many people do.
But you can easily build a system for around 1k if you are smart and shop right. But many people just want the best of the latest technology, and have the money to burn. That was my only point.

you have any interest in the new intel ssd's? I noticed they are fairly cheap. If only a little tiny bit, cheaper, then the other manufacturer of ssds.
I don't know if intel ssd's are high quality, but EVERYTHING intel makes is high quality. So I wouldn't be surprised. $800 is not bad. I don't have the $1700 for the rig I listed I want to build. I have a friend who is selling an old server for $650. It has two processors and like 32 gb of ram. I asked him what's wrong with it, and he said:
"nothing, the place at my work just bought a new blade server, and they don't want this old server any more, they were going to throw it away"
I was thinking of buying it, then throwing in a gaming card, and putting windows 7 on one terabyte partition, and leaving another terabyte partition for other uses. It has two terabytes, but only 7200 rpm hdds. I could buy two ssds to replace the current hdds if I wanted, but the board is old enough it's got SATA 2 interface, now SATA 3. Also I don't want a HUGE tower in the room, the dell I have right now is a low profile, it's got a 32 bit processor, so can only address the 3.5 gigs ram it has, but it's not bad, the processor is sub par, good enough to do basic stuff, it works fine.
If I do decide to deal with a huge castle looking tower, I might decide to buy it, and throw in a good gpu. Problem is that gpu I listed, is $500, and it's a cheap high end gpu, the newest one from nvidia is $30. But if I could go with it, then I'd buy the 17" hd monitor, and use it for gaming, and anything else. 32gb ram is not so bad, that is one thing that interests me, so I may change my mind yet and get it for $650, he said I have a few weeks to decide.
Stupid economy these days has done me no favor. If I had it my way, I'd be paying mortgage on a house, have a brand new car, be building a new 2 grand gaming rig. Oh well, it is what it is. I'm wondering if the newer xbox 720 will be out this year? If so it'll probably be $600 or more, and chances are it's gpu might only be sub par, who knows. I'll have to wait and see. I guess there's a lot to balance when you have a budget

The reason I'm building is because every paycheck or so I can plop down 150 bucks on computer parts, plus I need something with better sound quality then my laptop and I want to buy a 1080p eventually, but I already have a 720 in my room, so I'll probably just keep both.

I'm using an Intel 120GB SSD right now.
Intel SSDs are TOP of the Line. They are the best, period. They WERE pricier than the others, but for good reason. Especially the new Cherryville SSDs, those things smoke.
In terms of SSDs manufacturers quality/performance, IMO it goes in this order: 1. Intel 2. Samsung 3. Crucial 4. Corsair 5. Mushkin 6. OCZ (Only the newer ones, Vertex/Agility 3s.. the Vertex 2s SUCKED Ballz) 7. Everyone else
I noticed they just recently dropped the prices. I had heard a few months back that Intel, Crucial and Samsung were planning to collaborate a major price drop on the SSDs to compete with the HDD market. Looks like that is beginning to happen now.

i own 4 ssds and in terms of benchmarks it's 512gb Samsung 830 > 256GB Crucial M4 >120GB Sata II Corsair F120 > 256GB Sata II Toshiba
Experientially though, they're all real fuckin' fast and highly recommend anyone thinking about an SSD to take the plunge, prices have never been better...
Some noteworthy things, crucial and intel have bootable ISO firmware updates, which is pretty handy if you ever find that someday you want to use it for an operating system other than windows... the sandforce drives from corsair have a a windows only firmware update, and the utility itself has caused a lot of people grief...
because of this, imo fuck corsair's drives... the micron drives from crucial comparatively rolled out firmware updates for the couple odd issues they had lightning fast compared to the sandforce drives from corsair, where I waited maybe a couple years to see fixes to some minor nuances....
In the unlikely event that I had to deal w/ an RMA, i'd prefer Crucial over Samsung by a long shot... my Samsung drive though is covered through Apple (as well as my Toshiba), which is why I own them in the first place.
Personally I'd give the best bang for the buck to Crucial M4... totally love it.

Yeah I have a Crucial M4 too... they are pretty sweet. Samsungs are top fucking notch though, right up there with Intel.
I just reseated my CPU and re-applied IC diamond (same stuff I had on there before) Just as I suspected, my prior application sucked or something.
Idle temp dropped by about 8c.... was hanging around 45c idle before I shut it down. Cleaned it, Reapplied and booted back up and idling at 37-38c. Still higher than I would like (was aiming for 30-32c.... ) but I'll settle for under 40c... I'll give it some Prime runs and let it cure a bit and hoping to see temps go even a bit lower..
I know the tjmax is high on the Sandy Bridges (100c?), but personally with OCing, I never really want to see them above 70-75c. The tcase on the i5 2500k is actually 72.6°C according to Intel. From what I know the chip starts to degrade a lot faster around 70c. Yeah sure, you can hit 80c, or even 90c before the chip shuts itself off. But if I ever got anywhere CLOSE to 90 I'd be shitting bricks. You are definitely damaging the chip above 80.
Just ran a quick 10 min Prime 95 blend test and maxed out around 64c, stabilized around 60c. I'm happy enough.. my idle temps are a lot lower.

Tcase is the surface temp though, I dunno about you but my CPU temp reading is about 20c cooler than my core temp reading... w/ prime95 running all night the CPU temp is roughly 40-45c, where my core temps hit as high as 60-65c.... I'd be concerned if my CPU temp reading was over 72c , otherwise IMO it's pretty much running within specification...
