Panaeolus cinctulus or panaeolus foenisecii?
    #16606908 - 07/28/12 03:32 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I'm completely new to mushroom hunting and this is my first find so I would like some opinions. I found what I hope to be cinctulus's but I think they could be foeniseciis. I found a bunch of them and they are most likely just a big mix of both, I found them on a well maintained lawn. They weren't in groups, they were more spread out, but some of them were growing in little bunches.
Gills:
Dark greyish to black, attached. Most of them had lighter brown gills, I'm assuming those ones are the foes

Stem: tanish in color, thin and fragile. bruise a darker tan/light brown. Alot of them were white-ish at the base, and some had thicker stems than others. No blue bruising whatsoever

Spore print color: I took multiple spore prints. Some were black and some were a light brown.

Here are some pictures:

Some of them looked like this and I thought that they were the most promising

Some of them also looked darker like these ones

I'm pretty positive that I found a big mix of cins and foes. I'm just not sure how to tell the difference between the two, but I picked out all the ones with darker gills assuming them to be cins. Was that correct? And also, is there any way this could be some other type of mushroom that is dangerous? And is it normal for alot of them to be different shades of brown? I live right on the coast of california in santa cruz, some consider that to be northern california. I'm confident that these are safe, but I'm a little nervous, this being my first find and all :/

They look alot like the cinctulus i found in my buddys yard.
Spore print them all and keep all the ones with jet black spore prints. Here is a pic of those abundant foes.foe spore print.

I've noticed the cincts drop a very heavy coat of spores compared to other pans.

Good observation. I've never collected any other Panaeolus, but I have noticed P. cinctulus usually prints 3x faster than most mushrooms that I collect.
