Diluting Isopropyl Without Distilled Water?
    #16595745 - 07/26/12 08:47 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I've been studying the forums for a few weeks now and there's so much info here that I've learnt a lot without having to ask any questions but there's one thing I can't find the answer to. I already have some 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, say I wanted to dilute this down to about 70% to make it more effective, would I have to use distilled water? How important is that? Could I just use tap water or are there other alternatives? If it's essential, should I just make it myself with some cheap home method? I live in a place where distilled water isn't sold regularly in shops.

70% ISO is very cheap. I'd just pick some up. I'll look into it though and see what I can find. I'm sure someone around here know's. It's never crossed my mind before.

Dilute seven parts isopropyl with three parts water. This is a common measure; "rubbing alcohol" has 70 percent isopropyl content.

Odds are... whatever you are planning to do with 70%, you can do 99.9. IPA is cheap.

*What is the IPA needed for?*    (Should have asked this first. Sorry.)

I don't think it would matter if you used tap water or distilled.

I'd just buy some 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and throw the 90 percent into my medicine cabinet. It's inexpensive, and nothing would be going to waste.

70 percent contains more water, and thus is more efficient at permeating the cell wall of certain organisms. 70 percent is more efficient than 90 percent.

Thanks for the replies. I should have explained, Isopropyl isn't really freely available here in the UK either. I'd have to order it online, pay postage and wait for it to arrive which I don't have time for, or I could buy expensive isopropyl spray from an electronics shop which says it's between 60% and 100% without being specific. I'm using it to clean my glove box, work area, tools, gloves, generally killing any possible nasty intruders and I've read RogerRabbit saying 70% is the most effective because it penetrates cell walls but 99.9% doesn't. He also says to dilute it with distilled water. I'm not sure why. I can't buy any though so if tap water or boiled water is fine I'll use that. Otherwise I'll just have to use it at full strength.

A 10% bleach solution would work well for what you intend to use it for and it's way cheaper than alcohol by volume.

Distilling water involves more than just boiling it. Why do you continually post inaccurate information like this?

True^^^.

Also in the UK you'll find that denatured alcohol (methyl spirits) is used where we in the USA use isopropyl.
You likely can find bottles of it at the corner pharmacy.

But yeah, for cleaning surfaces you want warm soapy water and maybe a dilute bleach rinse.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

I think distilling water actually involves catching steam and letting it run down a tube into another container. I can't really be arsed with all that. I've got enough to do tonight.

Bleach though eh?

Well shit I've got tons of bleach. Why didn't I think of that? Just that everybody talks about IPA here I thought it was essential. Got some meths for my spirit burner. Don't have a huge amount of the isopropyl left either. I'll use the bleach solution for cleaning larger areas then and just use the isopropyl I have left for cleaning the needle after inoculating each jar and before flame sterilizing for the next one.

Nice one fellas, cheers!

And you probably still live with her. I'm glad posting random misinformation in response to legitimate questions is comedy to you. You seem to make a habit of it.
