Indirect Sunlight a day
    #1659564 - 06/24/03 07:57 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Is there too much indirect sunlight colonizing jars can get in a day? Friend is thinkin about just leaving them on his dresser so the sun can get at them during the day. He has them in an incubator but he doesnt think he needs that cause his room is about 86 fahrenheit, do you think this would be ok?

A simple rule is that if you can see your mushrooms, then they're getting enough light.  Some mushrooms are not phototropic.  Meaning they're not like plants.  They don't need light to grow, they just need light to give them a direction TO grow.

How much light is enough?  I can't remember the exact amount but its less than a second a day

As for leaving them on your friends dresser....  Just think, "How much sun do they get in the great outdoors?"

Although if it does get hot, watch your humidity.

It don't think that COLONIZING jars need any light. Right?

Your plan is OK as long as you want invitro pinning. My kids tried the hippie neglect tek once and just weren't as satisfied as they were with thier casings.

Invitro pinning occurs when your shrooms begin to grow while the cakes are still in the jar. They will be ok and some say theat they are better because they are basically all aborts and therefore usually more potent. They will be ugly but they will do the same job. If you don't have space for a terrarium or you just need to be stealthy, then that is the way to go.
Do a search for the HIPPIE NEGLECT TEK tp find out more.

So could he just throw them in to his closest an not worry about getting enough light? The temp will be around 85.

For colonization no light is required. Closet is perfect. For fruiting you can choose to do invitro or not, I say not IMHO, case them.
