Worms or Larvae or Something Living and Moving
    #1659449 - 06/24/03 09:01 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

The colonization was going a little slow cause my popcorn was a bit too wet so i cracked loosened the band on the lid a bit, i did not open it. Most of my jars sped up considerably after i did this. 1 of my jars was looking really sludjey so i picked it up and looked at it closer and there are like clear worms moving around in there. It scared me when i saw them and i almost dropped the jar. After inspection it seems there are a few jars that are looking sludgey in parts but no worms could be found. I separeated the infected one.

What i want to know now.. is what do i do with this jar?
I dont know if these worms are harmful if i touch them on accident and i dont know if i should clean the jar or just throw the whole thing out. Has anyone ever had this happen? I need a response quick before these things grow big and eat me alive lol.

help!

SANITATION!

You probably don't have worms, but fungus maggots. Larvae of flies.

Maggots are no good, toss that jar!!! By the time that jar reaches 100% (if it does) there will be more maggots in there than you'll want to find out. Those maggots eventually mature into flies, and the cycle continues.

If you spot any flies/maggots on your birthed cakes or casings, kill them immediately (smash em). If you can get the fly before it lays its eggs, you're in good condition, if you see maggots... by the 2nd or 3rd flush, if not the first, your mushrooms and mycelia will be overrun.

Good luck next time!

How did they get in to my jars?
I never even opened them!
Is just loosening the lid enough space for the buggers to get in there?

Fungus flies are -really- small -- think fruit fly size.  So, yeah, they could've gotten in there around the threads after you loosened it.

My advice -- either throw the jar away unopened or PC it and then trash the stuff.  Don't just dump it out, since that'll leave more fungus flies in your area.

If they're not flies yet (so you don't have to worry about them flying out) it'd be easier to just take the lid off & microwave it till you're sure they're dead.

"A nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations...

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed... The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people..."
