Atlanta area mushrooms
    #1659265 - 06/24/03 05:53 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

So I decided to go hunting at one of the local parks, and found TONS of these solid orange mushrooms... They start out in size like all normal mushrooms ive seen, but as i found larger ones, they formed a cone shape. They were EVERYWHERE, i mean i saw like hundreds of them. I know they are not active, was just curios as to what they were, because they are out in full force... I doubt they are even edible... anyone have any ideas?

substrate: forest ruble
color: all orange

sorry thats all I know about em

Your description is pretty vague. Any time you want a mushroom identified, you need to pick a few and bring them home so you can study them in detail and answer any questions somebody might have.

The most obvious possibility is that you've found a bunch of chanterelles (genus Cantharellus), which are coming up in the south right now, and which are some of the choicest edible mushrooms around.

If you want to know what they are, you should go get a few so you write a detailed description of them and answer questions about them.

Happy mushrooming!

They're not these are they?

They tend to have orange caps and will grow at the edge of forests along paths sometimes.

Well your description, although vague, has a lot of information that points to chanterelles. Parks are a classic habitat in the area, and I have found hundreds of them in Atlanta parks and forests. If they looked like this Chanterelle Pictures than it is highly likely that you found one of the choicest (and my personal favorite) edible
