Mr. Mushroom, I would advice one to remove the non-active species form Paul's list as that just causes confusion tot he newbie looking for that special treat.

Forgive the ignorant question, but there are non-active species in the genus Psilocybe? I was under the assumption that species were placed in this genus because they contained psilocybin or psilocin.

Actually the chemicals psilocine and psilocybine were derived from two sources.

Quote:

Hofmann and his colleagues named the substances in the Mexican mushrooms psilocybine and psilocine. The former given the pharmaceutical trade-name as "indocybin (Registered trademark)" in recognition of the Indians who first used the mushrooms. Indo both for the Indians and for indole, the nucleus in the chemical structure of psilocybine; and-cybin after Psilocybe. Sandoz then manufactured pills with 2 and 5 milligram doses of Indolcybin (Registered Trademark).

from "Mushroom Pioneers" by John W. Allen, 2002.

There are more than 240 species of Psilocybe inthe geus.

mj
119 of them are psilocybian.

alltogether there are currently more than 216 various species of fungi which are considered entheogenic.

188 of those are psilocybian.
