Asking the Farmers Permission
    #1658681 - 06/24/03 02:11 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

So what do you guys usually say? Ive always herd to ask first but when me and a couple friends went we just couldent come up with anything valid....i mean how do you not sound stupid going up there and asking to pick shrooms...or collect shit. It just seemed kind of obvious that he would know we were picking shrooms.

but i guess the only place you can end up if they say no is where you already are.

what's your local college?

tell him you're a student of biology, majoring in mycology (the study of mushrooms) and you're trying to collect specimens to do microscopy assays on spore samples in the area, to see if the environment has effected them over the last 100 years =)

I keep a plan in the back of my head of what i would say if caught.

I would say that I am conducting a study on the local plant life and how the state's weather patterns effect it. I always keep a prairie field guide in my back pack while hunting. But I do take notes on what I see while in the field. So if caught I would just show my notes and explain what Im doing.

I always ask and say it exactly like this, with a bit of southern charm added....

"Excuse me sir, I was wondering if I could look in your field for mushrooms"

works well

and at least you wont get arrested for trespassing

Write up a fake project proposal. Something like ...

"All students are required to search for indiginous fungi in the surrounding areas. They are to bring back the samples, gathering as many as one can, and do evaluations on a microscopic level. Controlled samples will be provided to compare and contrast samples with. The purpose here being a test of ones idenitification skills. There is too a secondary purpose here, in that each student must write a 10-16 page paper on the evolution of 3 specific species in your area. You must provide evidence of the evolution and provide field data to support your claims.

Description          I            Species
----------------------I---------------------------
                      I
----------------------I---------------------------
                      I
----------------------I---------------------------
                      I
----------------------I---------------------------

Something like that

I found that if you go with a story such as, hi im (name) from (name) college where i am a microbiology major. my school is awarding a $20,000 scolarship for the first student to properly a (randon mushroom name, the more complex the bettter) which is north americas Rarest mushroom. i was wondering if i could go out in your field and take some notes and pictures of possible specimens.
this worked for me but then the old guys dad came out and told me

"son, my dad might not know what youre doing but i do, Mushrooms.
And then he pulled out his wallet and showed me HIS FUCKING BADGE!!!
he then told me
"why dont you head on outta here"
I assume there was nothing he could do since i asked permission

Another farmer i told exactly what i was looking for and he told me to go oick the hell outta them, his family did it all the time and that i could come back again when i was back in the area.

perhaps honesty is the best policy

See if you can fish in their ponds. Normally, most farmers will have a couple of ponds in their pastures. Make sure you carry a fishing pole, and at least try to fish. Even better, if it's a productive mushroom pasture, and you catch some fish, clean'em and give'em to the farmer (the fish, not the mushrooms). He may ask you to come back and fish anytime.

I recently found a treasure chest. Not far from where I live there is a pay pond that you only have to drop two dollars in a box at the gate to go fishing and the pond is slap dab in the middle of a great big cow pasture.
So to recap, all I have to do is pay two dollars and I have free range of a huge mushroom wonderland all day long.
