saw something about witchcraft being tied to incidental ergot poisoning.

episodes of mass hysteria in small, european villages in the middle ages, folks acting crazy, dying.

witches blamed.

recently, very high levels of ergot found in tissue samples of some who died.

Okay a little ergot history here for all to revel in.

Saint Anthony's Fire, a name given to ergotism inthe 16-17th centrury.

Saint Anthony is a priest who was known for having an ifinity with wild animals among other things.

He was also klnown as a priest who carried on his person, "Bell, Book and Candle." Those were familars int he field of witchcraft.

Bell, Book and Candle was a ovie with Kim Novak about a witch which became the basis for the movie "I married a Witch and later for the TV series "Bewitched."

Now, from the 15th centuyry to the middle of the 17th century in Europe, many people in small townships and villages suffered from a strange malady witch (pardon the pun) became known as Ergotism.

There were two forms of this strange disease which killed tens of thousands of people who had eaten breads made from the grain of rotted rye. Ergot is a small fungus which occurs onthe tips of rotted rye grains. IT is also known as the "cock's Spur."

There were two forms of ergotism which afflicted those who partook of these breads made from rye. (1) Gangrenous; and (2) convulsive). People would feel like their bodies were on fire form the heat of the fevers caused by ergotism. So eventually they set up many clinics and came to call the disease St. Anthony's Fire. The parishes set up offices to help those afflicted with the disease.

In England this was not much of a problem due to the fact that the English ate whole wheat grains instead of rye.

After baking the bread, people would develope high feavers and suffer with limbs falling off and horrible burning sensations throughout their bodies.

OF couse one is fa,milar with Greek History and it was an ergot like fungus which was probably the Kykeon served to initiates at the Temple of Dionysius made from other similar grasses to ergot.

Well eventually by the late 1700s, chemists and pharmacologists learned what was causing the ergot infections and learned how to controll and get rid of it in the baking of the breads, within fifty years later, in the mid 1800s, midwives both Europe and the United States learned that in small amoun ts, ergot alkaloids could be used to stop post partum hemoraging in pregnant woman after child birth. AND IT COULD ALSO BE USED TO ABORT UNWANTED FETUS'.

See up to that period in humankinds history, many mothers died giving birth to children because no one knew how to stop the bleeding.

And thus it became a medicine popular in obstetics.

I remember in Florida in 1979 I applied for a job as a zook keepers assistant at the Jacksonville Zoo. They gave me a program sheet to memorize and it was for tourists with warnings not to feed the animals LSD as it could bring on abortions.

This apparently is also another use for some of the extracts from ergot.

sO THIS IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE HISTORY OF St. Anthony's Fire.

Oh YEs, one more small detail. I use to own a copy of the yearbook for the AMA's 1908 Annual COnference in Chicago, Illinois and the introduction was by an MD who wrote about ergot and was inquiring if anyone had heard of any intersting stories about this strange compound to contact him immediately. Wish I still had a copy of the booklet. IT also was three-quarters filled with Welcome Drugs drug prixces and included Cocaine Hydrochloride for 22 cents a gram and mophine based compounds and cough syrups vor uner twenty cents each.

That case from France has since been disproven. It was apparently some kind of poisonings due to mercury.

In fact the actual case was the basis for the book called "St. Anthony's Fire."
