Cooling blocks???
    #1657688 - 06/24/03 04:13 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I'm looking for something to cool my terrarium. I already ruled out those coolers that use ice, I don't want to have to change it every six hours. I'm looking for something cheap and electric, like the opposite of a heat rock. To be used in conjunction with this:

Does something like this exist? Or should I just go to the flea market and get a window ac for my closet?

how big is your terrarium? if you can, freeze a gallon of water and stick it in there. like a gallon size milk jug or something......

62" x 27" x 19" Pretty big.

What I'm really shooting for is a fully automated setup.

Ahh... Automation!
You're not gonna reach 100% automation, unless you have something that is programmed to decrease/increase humidity levels, if you're trying to induce pinning and whatnot.

Remember, to induce pins, you need lots of humidity!

My "fully automated" setup consists of $10 Vicks Natural Mist Humidifier purchased off e-bay, a walmart-style greenhouse, and a bunch of oyster mushrooms!

I still spray the interiors with water to get pins!

Dude, you need to find the lowest point in your house, the basement. My friend struggled with the problem for a long time until he realized that his basement was in the perfect temp. range. If you aren't so fortunate to have a basement than you might want to try constructing a cheap cold plate out of an aluminum sheet, a peltier pad (ebay) and a heat sink/fan (not as complicated as it sounds)(might not work). My friends was in development when he moved his setup into the basement.

Get one of those little fridges, and rig up a cooling tube with a pump. You would run this tube back and forth under the tub, and run the two ends into the baby fridge. Then you put the biggest container of water you can in the fridge and hook the tubes to it. At that point you could add a pump to the setup and control it with your controller. It would kind of be just like a cooling system on a car motor except smaller. I have no idea if this would work, but it sounded cool in my head so...

...do it and tell me if I am a retard or not.

What temp range are you looking to get?

I had a look through some catalogues I have lying around, and unless you want to spend about ?2000 +VAT ($4000+), you'd be wise to go for a window ac from a flea market, as you suggested.

You could try making something out of an old fridge, but it would take a lot of work, and probably leaking refrigerant everywhere (which usually is a cfc).

Just to clarify, the fridge idea would use water as the coolant. Aso, do you have a window in your closet for the AC to exhaust out of?

Yeah I gathered that was what you ment, but I thought that seemed a little wasteful as you're having to cool down the whole inside of your little fridge and then keep it on and cool, then you're going to control the water pump to pump water when the temp gets too hot, and thus control the temp (probably not very accurately).
It could work, given time.

On the other hand you could just use the plumbing that's on a big old fridge along with its thermostat which could be switched on and off as required to maintain the temp...... but you'd be limited to the operating temps of the fridge (5degC usually).

However, I don't think either of these are particularily good solutions anyway!

As for the ac, hmmmmm, if you're cooling the inside of a closet, with a bit of cheap insulation I don't think the temperature outside the closet would effect the temp inside.
I get your point on still having the exhaust coming into your room though...LOL...you could pipe it out, I guess.

I have a few more ideas, but this post is already too long!
LOL
