Sida cordifolia/Catha edulis/Leonotis leonurus ID?
    #16573723 - 07/23/12 12:17 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Planted a bunch of things at the same time and made the mistake not to label them in planters. Here are my thoughts, anyone know for certain?=/

Sida cordifolia (Almost 100% certain, fast grower. Transplanted to bigger container in less than 2 weeks)

Catha edulis (Red Stemmed Variety)? Took forever to germinate. Only thing I could think that was planted that could have a red stem. Two new sprouts have suddenly popped up with red stems too after nearly a month. Unknown cactus in background.

Leonotis leonurus-Wild Dagga? Looked healthy and then died over the weekend although some new growth is seen.

It's pretty difficult to identify seedlings as so many look a like but there are people on here that can tell you if it's not a certain seedling depending on how it looks. I haven't grown any of those plants so i can't help you much i just wanted to let you know that you will have a better chance of getting an ID. once they are older

I always get the leonotis mixed up,and I was thinking of leonotis nepetifolia.I do know that I grow catha, and that's not one.Seedlings of plants are easy to identify, once you've grown them enough:grin:

Oh well, yeah I wasn't sure. I have a few seeds left though so I'll just try again. Any tips on how to successfully germinate them??? =]

The only other thing I attempted to plant was prickly poppy's but I didn't think the germinated at all...Is it possible it could be that????

Hey Molly, can you get a better pic of the one you thought was Catha,on further inspection,it could very well be one.The pics are just too blurry to make an exact ID.

That Leonotis leonurus could be right. I grew that this year, too, and your pic looks like one of mine that didn't make it.

the red stemmed plant is an amaranthus (seeds are good to be eaten, but it is really invasive).
other plants truly want to be watered (please...do it)

well Molly..
if you have to germinate seeds , the best thing is placing them into a pot with sterilizad soil and close everything into a transparent plastic bag.
to have more chanches, you can soak them, before sowing, with some GA3 or  NAA (alpha naphtalenacetic acid).

            good luck!

<- Currently growing Sida Rhombifolia

That doesn't really look like a Sida sp. They have smaller more lignified stems. Pm if you want to trade for some Sida.

you leonotis need more water.  they do dryish, but not dry or you get that wilt.  most leonotis you buy online as leonurus is mis identified and so far all but 1 source i have gotten seeds from sent me nepetifolia which is a pretty difficult mistake to make seen as how incredibly different their leaves should be.  seems most people have the same experience, they get nepetifolia.
